I remember people in Lakewood being upset at rules they thought were tilted against their needs, but I don't remember Murphy specifically targeting Lakewood. Your recollection is probably better than mine on this, though.

IMO it was Lakewood police who was at fault, although they did perceive that they had pressure from Murphy.
Of the 565 municipalities in New Jersey, I believe Lakewood was the ONLY ONE in which the police put out a press release WITH NAMES for every infraction! Newark had generic releases, '87 infractions last night,' '76 businesses closed by police,' with numbers that put Lakewood to shame - but a press release with a name equals a report in every major state media outlet. Lakewood got the reputation of being non-compliant because of our own police department, who - instead of understanding the nuances of "preserve, protect, and defend," chose to be complicit in inciting dangerous anti-Semitism against us.
They have been called out for it only once or twice, by some community members on Twitter, but the chief quickly blocked one and ignored others.
They are at fault. But they will never face any serious backlash about it.
