Topic Wiki

I would like to have had the following summary when I was looking for my answers. Since I only read the end of the thread, please add other pertinent information.

Best AntiVirus Software
Neither interferes with K9 now.  Do not have more than one antivirus running at a time.
Free - Avast           download here
Paid - Kaspersky

Best Free Spyware
ublock                    download here for FireFox

Firewalls
Windows Firewall should be ON at all times unless your antivirus software comes with one.
If so, it will probably shut off Windows Firewall on its own.

Before following the information contained here, check the date at the bottom to make sure this wiki is relatively up to date.

It's not a "when" question, paid will always be more protection (usually Internet related things) so if you're willing to pay you should pay.
How is windows Defender?

Did some research. Seems like the basic Anti-Virus features are free.
Additional options are what costs money but I don't need since I have a filter that runs through a VPN so I had should be somewhat protected anyways.
Regarding Paid and Free when it comes down to bare bones protection is there a real difference between paid and free?

How is windows Defender?
Windows defender is pretty good these days, and uses Lee's resources then most other 3rd parties.

It depends on the program. There are programs where their free version rank higher on CR then their paid counterparts.
According to consumer reports the best free version is Avira, I wouldn't recommend paying for something more unless you need the extra security.
Personally, I download viruses all the time so I stick with windows defender ;)

Interesting; wonder how accurate these reviews are.
Seems like Avira free version is really annoying from this page.
What second best free version?

I've been happy with Avast. Just make sure to uncheck everything except File Shield, and don't let it install their browser
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

So the when would be when there are no good ones available for FAR.

I don't know about the resources issue, but since I use healthy precautions, I don't see any need or benefit to anything else on computers that only I use.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!
