Computer Specs Discussion Master Thread
« on: February 11, 2020, 01:51:02 PM »
Sorry if there is an existing thread already.

What exactly is Intel Optane Memory?
.
I need a PC with at least 12 GB RAM,
I see this PC with 8GB RAM + 16GB Intel Optane Memory.
So my question is, does Intel Optane Memory compensate for less RAM? is this better than just 12GB RAM?

Thanks!

Optane is a new'ish thing so most 'knowers' don't have much real concrete data and experience. And TBH it probably depends a lot on the specific situation (the type of workload etc.)

Personally - my educated guess - I think that Optane isn't to be counted as RAM, in no way.

Funny thing is, on dell they market it together with RAM "24GB Memory: 8GB DRAM + 16GB Intel® Optane™ Memory"

Whereas on HP they bundle it with storage "256 GB Intel® SSD + 16 GB Intel® Optane™ memory"

Maybe they themselves don't know.

Correct.

Optane is "very fast" memory, which is technically what RAM is as well... but compared to RAM it is "MUCH slower"... so it is somewhere in the middle...

I'd side with HP on this because I think that the way the OS handles it is an improvement (cache) to the storage drive. And Dell is just trying to fool you in with marketing talk...
