Why I flew Spirit and would do so again!
« on: February 19, 2020, 02:43:50 PM »
I needed to get from SJU to EWR. My options were UA at $131 per passenger on a BE fare or flying spirit at $53 per passenger.

I booked spirit for 2 passengers, paid for the big front seat and for 1 carry on bag. The total price was $177.

I bought 2 bottles of water in the airport for $5 just in case I got thirsty.

The actual flight was ok, the flight attendant were rude to some other passengers and they failed to shut the lights on a Red Eye flight.

Spirit Pros:
1) Big front seat a cheaper cost than UA small seat, PRICE.
2) Better flight timing.
3) No one checked luggage size or weight.

Spirit Cons:
1) Lights kept on during a red eye flight.
2) Rude FA.
3) Passenger character.

In general what matters to me is the seat size. As an observant jew I cant eat the food anyways, so it boils down to the seat. Spirit did not let me down, the front seat was big and comfortable although without reclining . If I were to find a spirit flight priced correctly again I would not hesitate to fly them again.

Sorry to hear

but that's why I
1) Did not check baggage
2) Did not fly them when I was in a hurry or on tight schedule to get somewhere

I doubt if they were to lose a bag you wont get anything as comp as per DOT rules.

as a side note I dont think AA would be any better.

I hate to break it to you but all airlines have delays, flying an LCC doesn't necessarily make it more likely that you'll be delayed.

Or when a flight is cancelled and the next flight is two days later.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I think the OP clearly articulated reasoning behind decision, if you find fit to make up some other reason, OP gives you the full authority to do so.

I recently had a regular carrier canceling a flight with then offering no viable alternative option on their own metal. They refused to get PAX to final destination in reasonable time frame. I ended up taking them to court for not accommodating PAX on another flight with an airline they have an interline agreement with. Point being; other airlines will do as much as possible to avoid using their interline agreements.

Despite seeing this happen to my BIL, I would personally gladly fly Spirit if I am close to certain that the flight is operating, big front row seats are available, and total price is right.

What happened in court?
I actually went to trial and I am awaiting a verdict.

The verdict is excepted by March 28th.

It's a long write up and would rather leave it for another day, nevertheless, If the court rules in my favor, I wont be discussing it untill appeal window has closed. If court rules in defendants favor I'll write something up as soon as I can, as I dont plan on appealing. Obviously this all subject to change but will try sticking to what I just wrote.

Flew spirit 2x. Once to Vegas, was very comfy and brand new plane, flight was half price of other airlines. Flew them again recently to FLL, not as comfy but saved nearly 1k (after paying for baggage) for the dates/time I wanted. Flight was uneventful and was perfectly fine.

Exactly my point!

I think it's time for some more awareness to be raised on the topic of LCC as an alternative option.

1] Regular carriers are also charging for luggage on BE fares, In some cases even for carry on luggage. Its cheaper to pay for the luggage cost then to upgrade a BE fare [usually].

2] LCC allow some type of personal item which in some cases can be a pretty big personal item. Spirit allows a personal item the size of a back back and my back back fits just about the same stuff my carry on suitcase fits.

Dan has always said that if you can afford to risk it, it's not a horrible option. In my younger years, I went with spirit several times because worst case I get stuck somewhere for an extra day or two. It's still an option if you add freebird insurance. Don't think I'd fly with my family without it.

Spirit is amazing and on time performance is as good and better than most other airlines. Anyone still avoiding them is missing out. A family of four can save hundreds and maybe even thousands compared to the others.
