Correct, but the response of some here makes it sound like they believe this is the black plague.

Let's make things clear. The measures being taken are extreme measures intended to SLOW the spread so as to attempt to avoid overwhelming the healthcare system in the way it's been overwhelmed in China (despite building 2 hospitals in 8 days), Iran and Italy. Overwhelmed healthcare systems move into wartime triage mode, where a portion of people arriving at the hospital are just left to die, as their chances are slim to begin with.

China seems to have succeeded in turning the tide, they took EXTREME measures that a totalitarian regime like they have there can take. What we're seeing in Italy, Israel and now the US to a certain extent are the most extreme measures that can be taken in a western democracy.

That’s silly. If the death rate is 1-2% there’s no need for drastic measures? At its worst polio killed maybe 3000 in the US. Way less than 2%.

This is not about a numbers game, there is something wrong if you think a virus that kills at most a few percent of confirmed cases is worse than one that kills most who come in contact with it.

If you don't take measures to reduce the spread, it is not about the mortality rate of infected people, but rather the mortality rate of the entire population.
