The only way they could’ve avoided it was by delaying the announcement which is worse. Even if the first results were showing 95% effective, the sample size was too small to promise more than 90% with confidence. They couldn’t have done anything better IMHO.

Why would delaying the announcement be worse? They should have waited until right before it was rolled out to the public. This just looks like they are playing catch up.

Announcing you have an effective vaccine starts the process of preparing to get the vaccine approved and rolled out. Not just for Pfizer, but for policy makers and everyone involved in the distribution. They bought an extra 9 days by announcing early, and that has immense value.
