Yeah I have visions of this thread going on in circles 20 pages after every shul in Lakewood is already holding 3 shachris minyanim and 4 maarivs

I think the point is that government cant dictate how to live, the reason people stayed home is because that is the conclusion they reached calculating the risk at the time, and the same holds true now.

Honestly I think the whole shutdown was bungled from the start. It should have stayed much earlier and ended earlier and more easily. I blamed that on the government but if you want to say that it is the people who are responsible then so be it. I think that without the government many more places never would have shut and we would possibly be having riots against the Jews speeding the disease besides having many more dead from the disease itself.

I can check back at the EOs, but would they have done so without the EOs altogether? There probably would have been some but many would not have.

Shuls in my neighborhood closed almost a week before Cuomos "shelter at Home" order.

If the EO didn't require them to close then it wasn't the EO that caused them to close. Rabbanim said to close because thats what the Drs told them is necessary regardless of what the government said.

At least not as soon as they did, although they were doing their best to disinfect before they closed and they probably would have put in stricter measures every day before closing around the same time as shuls.

It probably would have happened eventually, but both the EOs and more so the public were way behind the curve.

Which, again, was obviously far too late. For some reason they never thought to question whether they should be more machmir than the govt, but only whether they could be more meikel (early on), which proves govt DID need to step in to make it happen as soon as they did.

Shuls closed before the government required it. The attitude changed significantly in the 3 days from when schools closed until shuls closed.
