This just goes to show how the thinking evolved. Early on, they were less worried about human closeness, more about contaminated surfaces.
All that wiping down at shuls while people were close together was pointless.
For some odd reason, the number one precaution, which is probably the most important, of not touching one's face and washing hands, has been forgotten with all the stress on "social distancing" and facial masks.
And a second wave might come, just because rather than stressing and ingraining proper handwashing habits and not touching one's face, there has been all this emphasis on distancing and masks (which essentially is a workaround for the important parts of not touching one's face and avoiding hand contact with others).
And since hands are the most significant transmittal mechanism of pathogens, with the face being the most significant entry point of pathogens into the body, it is sustainable habits about those two issues that should have been emphasized and ingrained, rather than non-sustainable lockdowns which cause signficant collateral damage.
