United basic economy - fees
« on: March 13, 2020, 01:11:49 AM »
I just bought a united ticket and didn't realize till was too late that they don't offer free carryon bags like AA does with basic economy.

so my question is does anyone have experience with bringing on-board 2 personal items i.e. backpack and laptop bag without being charged? per their website if someone shows up at gate with full-size carry-on, they will charged the standard $35 checked bag fee + an additional $25 gate handling charge.

They also charge for seat selection and the say on the website that "families may not be seated together" if you don't pay for the seat selection

Does anyone have any experience with this?

If I'm traveling with my wife and toddler, why wouldn't they give us a row (one side)?

Do I have to be concerned?

Officially, you're allowed to bring on board one carry-on bag and one personal item.
I never board with that group so I can't tell how extreme they go.

Get a United credit card.

Just booked UA basic economy tickets on a different cc by mistake, and I want to get free luggage that comes with my United CC. How can I switch? I'm still eligible for free changes on the ticket and it's showing as same price.

If you’re within 24 hours, cancel and rebook

I'm not
Refund to ETC and rebook with ETC plus spend $1 on a UA cc.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Refund to ETC and rebook with ETC plus spend $1 on a UA cc.
or that
Thanks. Just HUCA'd and they cancelled it and rebooked it on the correct cc for me  ;)

ive seem them require the basic economy passengers to consolidate everything into 1 bag on more then 1 occasion. (from what i noticed they seemed more concerned with the amount of bags and not the size but i did not pay that much attention)

I got this Backpack + Dolly (purple) for $25 (now it's $30) for United economy without knowing the actual size (it's not listed on the details).
But it turns out that the bag basically maximizes the space available without going over. The dimensions are 15x8.5x10.5(easily crushable).
The dolly should help with shlepping things in the airport. However, as it is 10.5 wide and solid, I don't know if it will work when it is in or strapped to the bag, for the personal item. Maybe strapping it to the carseat will be better.

Does anyone know how makpid they are about the 10" vs 10.5?

I paid less than a dollar on my cc when booking multiple tix (myself and others) under one reservation. The email they sent does not mention free bags- is there an easy way to figure out online if my free bag benefit was applied to reservation?

Go to your reservation on united.com. Towards the bottom of the page there is a tab for checked bags. If you have the CC benefit it will say the price for the first bag is $0

If you have more than 2 people on the reservation it will say $35 a bag but if you click thru to purchase it will say you get free bags

@Dan mentioned on DDMS that you can cancel for an Electronic Travel Certificate instead of a Travel Voucher. I can't find that option on the site. this is the only option I see:

Is this it? or is there somewhere else to look?
