Reader's Question:

What can we do to protect ourselves from the Corona epidemic?

Answer:

Firstly, whenever  a Tzarah (calamity) befalls Klal Yisroel and the world, it is important to remember that Hashem runs the world, and Hashem is the one that sent the Tzarah and He, and only He, has the power to  protect you from it, and to make the Tzarah disappear. He is 10000% in charge of everything, always.

Yes, it is important to follow the directives of the medical experts and employ practices that they suggest, but do not forget that " Ani Hashem Rof'echa" - Hashem is the ultimate healer!

Yes, it is important to follow the directives of the Gedolei Yisroel, be it to say certain Tefilos, avoid Lashon Hara and Rechilus, and any other directives they tell us to follow.

Wash your hands for hygiene... but also keep in mind that keeping our hands clean and pure is a Mitzvah commanded by Hashem!

Practice safe and sanitary practices in and around public restrooms...but also keep in mind that reciting the bracha of Asher Yatzar with Kavanah is a tremendous zechus for Hashem to keep our body functioning miraculously  as He designed it to!

Keep safe social distance from others...but also keep in mind  to avoid unsafe social gossiping, stay away from non-kosher social mingling, take a step back from impure social media, and remember that remaining close to Hashem at all times is a Jewish panacea!

Keep your hands away from your face and mouth...but also keep in mind to keep your mouth away from forbidden speech and forbidden foods.

Keep your family safe...but also keep in mind to look after others, especially the elderly and infirm in your area.

Do your part to support your family...but also keep in mind that many businesses in your community are likely suffering at this time; do your part to support your fellow Jewish businesses.

Pay attention to your physical health...but also keep in mind to pay attention to your spiritual health.  Chazal were very clear that Tzedakah protects us from calamity. Now would be a great time to give some extra charity to help those in need.

Furthermore, Chazal taught us that to protect ourselves from the Chevlei Mashiach we should engage in extra Torah study and Gemilus Chasadim. The arrival of Mashiach is close; boosting our Torah and Chesed now is a prudent thing to do!

Lastly, but not least, talk to your children about how they should act safely...but also keep in mind to  remind them to talk to Hashem often!

This virus is powerful...but also keep in mind that nothing is more powerful than Hashem. He is the ultimate power. He is the source of all power. He is the One pulling all the strings. He is the One to look to, to talk to, to turn to, to trust in at all times, no matter what.

May Hashem protect all of Am Yisroel and eradicate this plague from our midst!

Keep Davening!

if you think about it, all we are doing is staying home for a few weeks as a nation. 100 years ago this would not be that big a deal, but modern society has built itself around people traveling and spending.

A family member has kept his family home since before Purim and they are really getting into the groove of not going anywhere. Much more pleasant and easier than they thought it would be. Just enjoying the slow pace and spending time with the kids, etc. They do have the luxury of working from home, though.

The financial burden is the (BIG) issue. Other than that one should enjoy the time with their family.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

Five and three. Yes, I know it's more challenging with older kids and larger families.

Dear Chaveirim עמו"ש

These are trying times. Who would have imagined that over the span of two weeks our world would in many ways collapse? Physically, מי יחיה ומי חלילה ימות and economically מי יעני חלילה ומי יעשר. We do not know how long this upheaval will last and when and how the world will fully recover.

For the moment we need to protect ourselves and do everything within our power, that we neither infect others nor become infected by others. We need to strictly follow all the directives of the medical professionals. All the more so, we need to know that it is not the virus but our iniquities that harm us. We need teshuvah, tefillah and tzedakah to protect us from harm.

We should be reciting Tehilim after each tefillah, ch. 20, 121 and 130, also 142. Rav Akiva Eiger (letter 71) and others say that at Shachris and Mincha one should say Pitum Haketores.

Let us pray and hope that all of us and all of Klal Yisrael remain healthy and financially secure. B’ezras Hashem, Covid-19 will pass, however, it would be foolish were we to simply backslide and not learn anything from what has happened. We may need to fully reexamine our way of life. Must we continue bankrupting families who need to spend many thousands of dollars to pay for chasunas which they can ill afford. During Covid-19 many were limited to small chasunas made up of with fifty guests, with simple menus and without grand ballrooms. Why can’t this become the norm?

The Dept. of Health closed restaurants in our areas. Perhaps, we actually do not need restaurants besides on special occasions. People go to “take out” places on Friday and purchase their entire Shabbos. We have state of the art kitchens which are seldom used. We have lost the art of “making Shabbos.”

With schools closed, parents spent real time with their children. Fathers davened together with their younger children. Families were home together and getting to know one another.

Most importantly, we are now living with the constant fear of infection. Are we protecting our children from a different type of infection – smart phones and the like. Are we not infecting them, making them sick and corrupting their pure neshamos?  Even something as “benign” text messaging takes over and fills their lives with emptiness, lashon hara and litzanus.

Is this not a good time make some serious changes in our way of life, to bring more meaning and wholesomeness into our lives? If we can, perhaps Covid-19 will have had a positive effect.
