A degree is a fallback way to earn a living. Smart entrepreneurs can do way better, but people who aren't talented that way, will be left to handouts if they don't have some sort of training, be it an accountant, nurse, whatever. This is true across the board, chabad, Lakewood wherever. And it's much harder to do with 5 hungry kids than it is when you're 21.
That said the Lakewood system doesn't advocate that sort of prep, and don't see (as a non chabadnik) why shlichus or lack thereof should have any ramifications.
