On the headlines podcast this was discussed with the Lakewood beis din.

They recommend a 50% split after poel botel. But Medina the michzak has the right not to pay. A school or playgroup that has post dated Checks or credit card numbers are not considered michzak.

Does this apply only to playgroups or even older children and Yeshivos?

I can't answer for what was said on the podcast, much less how it sounded after editing, but the letter put out by the botei din is very explicit that it is only for playgroups and not schools.

I'm not even dreaming of getting any money back. But I do plan to ask the schools for tax receipts for pro-rated amounts, as little to no goods or services were exchanged compared to the amounts paid. Let's face it, the zoom classes and homework assignments are 90% busy work and mainly serve the purpose of continuity, but in reality I am homeschooling for the duration.

Schools and Yeshivos will be able to apply for the PPP grant from the government. I don't see why we should have to pay tuition when the Feds will pay for ten weeks of their expenses...

Does anyone know if CHS (a program available in lakewood- don't know about elsewhere) is paying the daycares did the time that they are out? I send to a real daycare and pay privately (not so common) I definitely feel that if CHS isn't paying why should the private parents get stuck with the bill.
Now truth is even if CHS is paying full amount then at least give the private paying parents a break - even if they continue to pay the Morahs there are alot less expensis on their end. No electric bill, crafts, etc.

My daughters school told me that since they expected a deficit this year they are continuing to charge tuition. And they will just need to fundraise less...

That’s not the way torah works. If they are allowed to charge tuition, fine. Otherwise the school can ask for a donation.

With all due respect, this does not answer any real questions.

First, in the times of the RAMA a parent would privately hire a melamed and pay him directly. It doesn't work that way today. If you have a class of 25 children and each child is paying $10,000 for tuition, the teacher is NOT getting paid $250K per year. Yeshivos operate on a commercial scale. Only a fraction of tuition a parent pays actually goes to the teachers. The rest goes to maintenance, food, administration etc. Essentially if we are going strictly by the RAMA, we should only be paying 1/5 of the tuition which is what the teacher gets paid.

tbh I didn’t read this entire thread before posting.

Are schools being transparent about what their expenses are like now with Corona compared to before? If they’re not going to end up paying rent, not feeding my kids, and paying only the main teacher for each class to do a video session for an hour a day, why am I getting charged full tuition?

It hurts extra that DW is an assistant in the school, they obviously pay her peanuts and her part-time salary covers only half the tuition. They aren’t paying her a penny now, but they’re asking for full tuition to be paid “so they can pay the teachers before Pesach”. I call bluff.

Open your books and we’ll see what’s what.
