How many hours of 'remote' school do your kids have?
« on: March 18, 2020, 05:10:57 PM »
I'll start with one of my children:

Neighborhood 5 Towns/Far Rockaway
School Yeshiva Darchei Torah
Boy or girl Boy
Grade 4th grade
Time per day Limudei Kodesh: 45 minutes
Time per day secular studies: 20 minutes + some homework
Teleconference or Zoom: Teleconference (they are not using Zoom because 'they discourage internet use' :-\ )

While I understand that this has been a hectic week for everyone, it feels like the school is doing the bare minimum and wiping their hands clean (no pun intended) by thinking an hour of so is acceptable.

What do you think is acceptable? How is your kids school handling this?

I wonder if it is possible at all to do longer. Many parents have only one phone, with many kids in school needing it, so the school needs to alternate timings. In addition keep in mind the teachers have kids at home too. Im not saying the schools are doing enough, just pointing out the situation is hard for everyone.

The teachers have kids at home to, is wonderful, but guess what, most people are working full days, and their kids are home. Why should they be different?

This can all be worked out. The schools need to get on this. Rent a large number of phones and tablets to send to teachers and students. There is a CH company renting iPads.

Who is watching their kids while they work? I think it depends on their ages. Some people can't work because their kids are home.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

My kids are complaining that they are assigned more remote work now than they do in class. 5 kids and between Kodesh and Chol it's a 9:30-9:30 schedule with some breaks... (I have no idea what the breakdown is between the kids cause we're both working from home while this is going on with three phones used most of the day.) Seems like the teachers are playing a trick on the parents.

Subject: The Virtual Classroom

To our Dear Parents:

We are pleased to inform you that, beginning the week of April 27th, we will be launching our virtual classroom program with video conferencing. This method of remote teaching was custom designed for our specifications, and after consultation with Gedolei Yisroel we feel it will be a huge improvement over the current phone conference arrangement.

Of utmost importance to us as we researched solutions for remote teaching was our Yeshiva’s hashkafos of chinuch, and to that end the hanhala and board members at Bnos Bais Yaakov and Yeshiva Darchei Torah worked together to develop a wonderful solution that will provide the full benefit to our talmidim while maintaining the values that we hold dear.

The Yeshiva has purchased kosher Kindle tablets for use by each talmid in grades N-8. These tablets have been mechanically modified to simply contain a custom video conferencing app and a program with the classroom handouts. There are no other programs on the device and the video conference sessions are inaccessible from anywhere except our talmidim’s tablets. We plan to commence distribution of these devices over the course of the next week and will send you more information as soon as a safe distribution plan is developed.

The expense to produce the custom device is $145, but with the help of a special benefactor, the Yeshiva paid $105 per device. As you understand, this is a significant and unexpected expense for the Yeshiva and we are seeking the participation of our parents to whatever extent possible. The suggested donation is $40 per child, but we would greatly appreciate it if our parents would consider covering the full $105 per-child expense.

To make a payment for your childrens’ devices (or to assist another parent who may be unable to pay for theirs) please click here and add any pertinent information in the notes .

The following are some important notes regarding this new program:

We will be continuing with teleconferencing for the next week.
A home WiFi connection is necessary to operate the device. If you do not currently have WiFi access at home, we will send information for the purchase of the KPhone Safe Mi-Fi device. A single device can accommodate up to five tablets.
The Yeshiva sessions will not be accessible from any other internet or Zoom device.
Yeshiva sessions will also be accessible via telephone conferencing.
We are in the process of developing a specialized app to enable rabbeim/teachers' video messages to be viewed as well as school assignments.
A tutorial on how to use the tablets will be available for parents and students.
This is an ongoing process and we will need your cooperation as things progress.

This has been an extensive and collaborative effort that involved the chinuch and lay leadership of our schools, as well as technical experts. It is being done because of our unyielding commitment to protect the kedusha of our students and to maintain the highest standards of our Yeshiva.

We thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we enter this next phase together, and we look forward to a successful remainder of the year.

wow. Very impressive. I wonder if they'd be willing to share this "proprietary" set-up with other schools.

Exactly what I predicted. Thank you for sharing!

Wondering if Lakewood and Yeshivish Brooklyn/Monsey will do this as well. I vote yes when it’s mandated by the government but you never know.

Not necessarily sad. I have your email so I’ll forward you something I got, tell me what you think.

I disagree with it but it gives points to ponder.

Schools have to be realistic. If almost  no one on your school has internet, I understand not having online classes.
I know of several schools which most of the parent body have internet, and refuse to have video classes with a call in option since it's "kashering" the internet. What do they think the kids are doing all day instead???

Right, I’m not sure what the tablet really consists of. Would be interesting if there are already 2 versions released

Also, never say never, because schools want to charge tuition and for federal/state money, and also have to meet state requirements in general. If it’s mandatory they may have no choice.

My kids' school is moving from 1 hour rebbi teleconference and barely any general studies to nearly a full day of zoom starting this week. Curious what if anything they'll be doing for the likely small percentage that don't have internet, and probably much larger percentage that don't have enough devices to cover all their kids.

I see you are from Queens, would you mind posting what Yeshiva and/or the letter they sent? Curious how schools are reacting. Also girls’ schools.
