In a similar study of 233 U.S. COVID-19 patients - eight of whom had been severely ill - one in four still had symptoms 90 days after first feeling ill. Rates were higher for patients who had been sicker: 59.4% at 30 days and 40.6% at 90 days. "But even for very mild and initially asymptomatic cases, 14.3% have complications persist for 30 days or longer," the authors reported on Sunday on medRxiv. In the U.S. study, the most common persistent symptoms were impaired smell and taste, difficulty concentrating, shortness of breath, memory loss, confusion, headache, heart palpitations, chest pain, pain with deep breaths, dizziness, and rapid heartbeat.

I had said earlier that the virus binds the ACE2 protein and enters our cells.  That's true, but the virus can do other things before and after and in parallel to that.  There's a lot going on, with multiple pathways activated.  Sort of like a Rube Goldberg cartoon, where this activates that, which inhibits the other thing, etc.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rube_Goldberg_machine
So the authors here figured out another piece of the puzzle for one of these pathways.  I don't think it has immediate relevance for us, just good to know that they're on top of things. 

Drugs have been tested to block viral activity, and this new information suggests another pathway where drugs might effectively be used.  This is a good thing in general, because having multiple ways of attacking the virus may give options for those who develop side effects to one drug.  Come back in a couple years to see if it pans out.

From the article, "There are a number of these drugs that will be FDA-approved and in clinical practice within the next two years,” though it's not clear what stage of development they're in.  I would guess that at some point they might be available for trying under the "compassionate use" rule.  Perhaps they would be first tried on those covid patients who also have one of the conditions that those drugs might be helpful for, such as macular degeneration.
