Good to finally see a sympathetic post from a non-Jew! (I mean on social media, @CountValentine)

Wow Lakewood is surrounded by some haters, definitely worth making the case with איבה. Lakewood is probably gold comparing to Brooklyn with compliance, but thanks G-d the stone throwers here are quarantined. Other than reporting on the big funerals there isn't that much exposure B"H. Most likely due to different neighboring demographics.
Was a story on NJ.com of shutting down a big chol hamoed backyard party and a crowded toy store

I didn't see that until now, but just checked it up. Yes, the toy store is a valid point, though the article mentions that that parking lot was full while failing to mention that the store shares a parking lot with the town's largest grocery store. Regarding the backyard party - all seven people charged with violating the emergency order live in New York. It's a weird story, and I'm not sure what to make of it.

On a side note, Newark continues to have an average of about 75 incidents EACH DAY of people violating social distancing. The town is about 2-2.5 times the size of Lakewood, but the numbers (compared to 2 incidents or so in 2 weeks) show that facts don't really matter to haters.

Terrible. I see that News12 picked it up also: https://twitter.com/News12NJ/status/1250970690284589056
It's blatant falsehood. Lakewood has not had an incident of a wedding or the like in over 2 weeks. The only issue since was one store that got a citation for operating. The haters will hate with no rhyme or reason. Even many of the local secular media sources are reporting that the level of compliance tops any other place.
Here's an opinion piece from Asbury Park Press editor Randy Bergmann: https://www.app.com/story/opinion/columnists/2020/04/18/jackson-officials-witless-remarks-reinforce-townships-reputation-anti-semitism/5159013002/
Quote
Jackson official's witless remarks reinforce township's reputation for anti-Semitism | Bergmann

In an apparent attempt to cement the reputation of Jackson’s public officials as being anti-Semitic, Council President Barry Calogera used his pulpit to call on Gov. Murphy to order the N.J. National Guard into Lakewood to help stop illegal social gatherings.

Calogero apparently had seen and read reports of occasional violations of social distancing rules in the majority Orthodox Jewish community. He apparently did not see Murphy address that concern at a coronavirus press briefing.

Murphy quite correctly condemned those who had used social media to seize on a few scattered violations of statewide restrictions to condemn the community as a whole. That is exactly how bigotry works:  Point to the worst behavior of a few and apply it to an entire group.

Murphy took to social media himself to underscore his disgust with the anti-Semitism, tweeting: "Scapegoating, bullying, or vilification of any community is completely unacceptable —  today or ever.

"There is a special place in hell for the small minority that do this during this crisis.”

Calogero either missed the message or felt the need to exploit the incidents to score political points with what he believes is a winning message with his constituents: “I’m here to keep the Orthodox at bay.”

At Tuesday's Township Council meeting, Calogero said the extreme measure of calling in the National Guard was necessary because of the “selfishness,” “irresponsibility” and “inability” of some people in Ocean County to follow Murphy's social distancing orders.

"Unfortunately, there are groups of people who hide behind cultures and religious beliefs, and put first responders, and quite honestly all of Jackson and bordering towns, at risk,” Calogero said at Tuesday night’s township council meeting.

Calogero's comments were far more disturbing than the garden-variety bigotry that defiles social media.  First, he is a public official spouting this nonsense at a public meeting.  Second, he is an administrator for the federal government, serving as state executive director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency. That kind of behavior, which could be construed as inciting further bigotry, if not outright violence, against the Orthodox Jews, could be in violation of his contract.  If it isn't, it should be.

Third, Calogero's remarks come at a time when Lakewood is mourning the loss of more than 50 of its residents from COVID-19 and praying for the recovery of the more than 1,200 others with cases of the virus. The remarks, and their timing, couldn't have been any more insensitive.

Did Calogero really expect Murphy to order troops into Lakewood? If so, why didn't he directly contact Murphy's office instead of grandstanding at a council meeting? Did he first check with the Lakewood police, county sheriff or county prosecutor to see if they needed the help? Did he watch any of the videos showing the empty streets of Lakewood over the past few weeks?  There was no inkling from anyone in local law enforcement that it was time for Murphy to call in the posse.

Jackson is facing two federal lawsuits that accuse township officials of anti-Semitism. Calogero's witless public remarks are certain to further weaken the township's defense — and further reinforce township officials' reputation for anti-Orthodox bigotry.

The AG didn't even say that it is not okay. Only that they haven't reviewed it and that it either complies or doesn't. Very clear that this is really just arranging it before to ensure that there is an nderstanding and that it will comply to all existing regulations.

Why does he consider this a "hit piece"? I found the piece to be fairly balanced.

So why wasn't even one of the Lakewood sources asked about the AG's comments? They may be a simple explanation?

Also, if you look at the responses on Twitter, you know that framing a headline like this will open a torrent of the worst haters and bigots.

Lastly: (the first point is 100 percent true) https://twitter.com/YossiWolk/status/1252357469310861315

A Semite is a descendant of Shaim ben Noach - which includes Amaleik and Arabs. Many of them have been calls Anti-Semites - even though that term is incorrect.

I think the story is fair and newsworthy. Believe me, there's no love lost between me and the Forward.
