Shop Local!! (When it's safe to do so)

Ordering Amazon? Shop Local!

With Coronavirus rampant in our country, many of us are turning to online retailers like Amazon for our shopping needs. Someone even forwarded me a list of links to Amazon products that one can easily purchase if they are making Pesach for the first time, as many of us are being forced to do this year. This list contains hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise, from mixers, hot water urns, silverware, pots, cooking equipment, and just about anything else one may need for Pesach preparations.

While resorting to making huge purchases from Amazon may be smart “social distancing” practice, it can have a devastating impact on our local economy at a time when many businesses are suffering terribly. Sending such huge amounts of money to huge corporations will suck the business out of local stores, and will force many Lakewood stores to Ch’v have to close their doors, leaving many jobless.

No, I am not advocating for anyone to put themselves and their families in danger by venturing out needlessly to shop. However, many local stores have made ample arrangements for safe shopping that is no more dangerous than ordering online. Many storeowners have begun to offer free delivery, and most offer curbside pickup. Almost all stores, especially those that have been hit by this financial downturn, are willing to do almost anything the customer wants in order to keep their business afloat.

So, before you load up a heavy online shopping cart and send desperately needed local money out, pick up the phone and call your local storeowner. You may be able to safely get what you need while keeping your brother afloat.

(Note: this author of this does not own a local business and will not benefit personally from this message.)

So my local supermarket doesn't do delivery to "new customers" meaning ppl that never ordered online before. Yes, I always go shop myself there and never used their free service, now I can't use it when I need!
I don't feel sorry for them and I'll not shop there when it's over.

I'm not so worried about supermarkets. It's other stores that are suffering.

This is exactly the issue. Groceries are the only untouched business in the country and they even increase revenues. They can do whatever they want. I would like to help local businesses but why supermarket can't help us when they don't need us anymore. It's not like we're all in good shape, everyone is taking a hit. All I'm saying is that it needs to be both sides.

One of the large local kosher supermarkets has a limit of 4 dozen eggs per family (that part I'm ok with- most only allow two), but if you take a 5th dozen, they charge you $19.99. That part is not cool. You set a limit and you stick to it.

1. Groceries are not the only untouched business. Delivery couriers (UPS, Fedex etc) are at max capacity. The tech sector has a distinct advantage of working remotely.

2. If a recession (C”V) happens when this is all over, they will be affected along with everyone else, and will have to lay off all the extra employees they’ve taken on.

I was forced to go to a local grocery store 2 days ago. The place was packed, nobody wearing a mask, no bags, no delivery. I haven't been together with so many people in the same space for 2 weeks now thus violating my own rules.
I am not planning to go back to the local store for a while.

There were reports of million/s of dollars being collected in Lakewood to help aid struggling businesses. I can only imagine that most of those funds were raised from those who are not effected, or that are seeing a rise in profits.

They know the troubles going on, and I'm sure most are doing their part. I'm sure there are selfish people out there, but I assume it's the minority, not the standard. That's just my feeling.

Worthy to add that at this time when there are no mikvas available, it's not that smart to purchase your Pesach kitchen needs online, and then struggle to figure out where to toivel them, vs. shopping at your local store with a mikva on premises.

many rabbonim are of the opinion that heter is better then being over the lav of vinishmartem meod es nafsofheichem which would likely be involved in using a mikvah in a jewish store (at least the ones I have seen)

There are others such as selling (giving) a partnership to a goy. Each one is not lchatchila but we are not in a lichatchila situation right now.

if you can afford it and it fits your minhagim, buy prepared foods/ packages from your local caterer. They're all decimated. From the biggest to the smallest.
