Save on Car Insurance During COVID-19
« on: March 20, 2020, 10:57:44 AM »
Since I don't plan on doing much driving until this passes and definitely don't plan on going out at the same time as my wife, I put one of my cars on storage only coverage (just comprehensive) and cut my policy rate roughly in half. The car is not street legal and may not be parked on the street.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Some policies are based on miles driven. I would look at your policy and adjust that.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

They always ask me how many miles I drive when applying, but when I changed from 5-10k miles a year to 36k miles a year, it actually made no difference.

I'm already at the lowest band for miles driven.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

State Farm makes a big difference.

Geico only has 2 rates and the cutoff is at 7500 miles. 7500 and under is lower rate, 7501 and up is higher. (In NJ as of last year)

Cut in half if you don't drive for the next 6 months...

I got Geico to knock off about $30 for each of the next two months. Was hoping for better, but still better than nothing.

did you change coverage on any vehicles to storage only or just asked for a discount?

About 10% reduction.

No storage. I told them I’m only driving 10 miles per month now. (Which is true)

I lowered my SF mileage online. Agent called and said underwriting wanted to know what changed that I was driving less. You can't make this stuff up.

They have free time on their hands? Maybe less mileage can somehow relate to a risk factor that could cause them to raise your rates?

This is great, since I couldn't figure out how to lower my mileage on the Allstate website anyway.

Nice of them

Would be nicer if Allsnake paid claims.

So they’re saving $850mm and giving back $200m? Sounds like they’re making a killing and trying to preemptively “give back” before regulators require them to take actions that would cost them much more...
