My wife was in touch with 3 different places for the plasma thing. Mt Sinai called us over YT, we haven't gotten through to them yet. Another we had heard about through Agudah or something, and they told us to go to Asisa to do another COVID test, and if we're negative go back to donate the plasma. And lastly somehow we got an email from NY Blood Center, and when we called back, she made and appt tp donate with them at a location in the city for Sunday.

How soon after donation is the plasma transfused? Who are the patients getting it and how is it affecting them?

I don't know the answers to any of this, because we haven't done any of it yet.

Even if you donate, the person doing the collection might not know or be authorized to tell you. They might very well misinform you.

I’ve asked this question elsewhere, I keep asking because I’m wondering how ready-for-market these treatments are and how effective they are.

Convalescent plasma has not been approved by the FDA - it's considered investigational, and therefore it generally has to be done as part of a clinical trial. So I assume all of these places are participating in such trials. I know Mt Sinai's was. This list also has NY Blood Center and Montefiore: https://ccpp19.org/donors/index.html. There might be additional useful info there, since it seems to be the organizing body of this effort in the US.

Thanks for sharing that valuable resource. Based on this page it seems you’re incorrect and it seems Convalescent Plasma is authorized for IND use (in severe cases) outside of a clinical trial.

Anyone have the stamina to plow through the key scientific papers section and provide a TL;DR summary for those of us less scientifically inclined?

One concern with the scope of compassionate use is that it’s only authorized once the patient is R”L in really bad shape, pneumonia etc. and the antibodies might treat the virus but not the other symptoms/organ damage/effects of low oxygen etc that have developed.

I had read that already, which is why I wrote 'generally'.

As far as all the details of how this is potentially being used, it's all being studied - little is actually known yet. My motivation to potentially try to donate is because even if there is little immediate benefit to patients, donating allows the issue to be studied further, which may lead to benefit to patients down the line. And on top of that, it's a chance to potentially prove that I'm no longer spreading it, and that I might be immune to it for the near term.

How long did it take for your smell to return? I'm closing in on a month and still can't smell a thing  :-\

Someone suggested to me that this is a symptom of zinc deficiency, and loading up on zinc would quickly resolve this. Not sure I believe it.

I know someone who went to the ER for something else and had the same thing happen.

More and more evidence of these cases showing up.

Question: Were they showing symptoms and/or tested earlier?

At the same time the number of asymptotic infections is expected to increase as time goes by.

Are antibody tests not widely available outside of NY? I had no problem getting in NY, but family in PA was told that "no reliable tests are commercially available"
