Debunking FakeNews
« on: March 22, 2020, 12:56:37 PM »
Lots of #fakenews going around. Can we use this thread so that people who are too lazy to spend 15 seconds on Google can check before forwarding a WhatsApp?

Please include your source/proof that it is fake. Primary sources preferable to news articles.

Rumor:
Quote
Go to my2020census.gov and fill out this census form so you can get you stimulus check. That’s how they going to know where to send the checks. Forward this to everyone that you know. If you don’t fill it out you will not receive a check in the mail. Family of 4 could get $3,000 under virus relief plan, Treasury secretary says Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says the payments would be $1,000 for adults and $500 per child.
Call 1-844-330-2020 if u have questions

Source: WhatsApp forward

Truth:
https://2020census.gov/en/news-events/rumors/stimulus-packages.html

Quote
Census Responses Not Tied to Potential Stimulus Packages
Your answers cannot be used to impact your eligibility for any government benefits, including any potential stimulus package.
Will filling out the 2020 Census impact whether you receive a stimulus check?

No. Your answers cannot be used to impact your eligibility for any government benefits, including any potential stimulus package. The Census Bureau is bound by Title 13 of the U.S. Code to keep your information confidential, and the answers you provide are used only to produce statistics.

Effort required to debunk: 15 seconds Googling "Census stimulus check"

15 seconds on Google is too long for most fake news going around.

Just assume that any forwarded message promising somethings or giving warnings that you didn't hear from official channels is fake.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Same for any requests for personal/banking/confidential info.

The proverbial masses are unfortunately ignorant.

Anything that includes "forward to ten people" is guaranteed to be fake.

Are you saying ten people are not going to send me 100 each after I sent my 100?  >:(

Can someone confirm the text going around "from Rabbi Bess" about Rav Chaim doing a goral hagra to decide whether or not to do a wedding is fake?

Let me guess. We need to pass along the message to 12 people this time, or else we won’t be able to pull it off.

Right. But each of those 12 people will send the person who sent it to you $5, so you'll get $720 but it will only cost you $5.

Well that website has FAKE written all over its name.

Their communicated content is consistently overflowing with hyperbole and shock value, anything to arouse “compassion” and get you to throw your money at them.

They don’t write that. They just charge to publish it.
