 People have to realize that we get from Canada certain medical materials, and there are some Canadian that work in US hospitals.  Ontario Canada is closer to large cities such as Detroit  and New York than many other areas in the US. With NY already in short supply of medical professionals why anger you neighbours when you might need them.

There are also many, many high-risk Canadians currently in the US. Do you know how many Canadian snowbirds there are that didn't go back because of the virus? Florida is full of them.

I don't really understnad how it can be expected that at the same time as we are scrambling to get masks for our own hospitals we should be sending what we have away.

What happens when the Canadians become desperate and refuse to send any medical personal across the border, or threaten not to export any materials used for medical supplies. Was it worth it for masks?

I can hear a case made for keeping Canadian medical personnel in Canada if they are needed there, but many will just stay in the US for the higher pay with private medicine which is why they work there in the first place.

As far as raw materials, that is simply a threat for leverage.

Trudea can declare an emergency of some sort and deny any medical personal from leaving Canada. That would cripple the Detroit medical system as many of them are Canadians, plus it would deny New York the possibility of Canadian medical professionals coming over to help. Trudeau would score political points for doing such a move in retaliation to the US ban on exports.

The question is why it should be a trade war to not leave our medical staff who are currently being much more heavily affected than Canada to be exposed. Canada has MUCH fewer cases than the US. why should masks be sent to Canada to stockpile while workers here are inadequately protected? That someone would start talking trade war over it is like all of the hoarders and price gougers.
