Steve Levitt and Steven Dubner make the very convincing argument that paying politicians very well and/or giving them cash incentives for implementing good long-term policy would raise the quality of our pool of politicians and therefore our policies at a relatively inexpensive price.

Itís a good story in theory. But who controls the money and the metrics? And how do you ensure youíre incentivizing them more than whatever lobby (or worse...) theyíre currently motivated by?

The theory basically goes if you pay them millions they will not need to resort to the classic bribery that goes on, of course people prefer to work honestly and transparently at the job theyíre supposed to. Politicians just historically make their money/frills from lobbyists because theyíre poorly compensated in general.

Also, their proposal is that as long term policy is judged the politicians who enacted the well-done legislation can get bonuses.

A few holes in this logic:

1. It cost gazillions of dollars to get into office, honest people oftentimes canít afford to get on the ballot.

2. You still havenít explained how they quantify success. In a 4 year term a representative official (senator/congressman) will have voted on hundreds/thousands of items, and their voting record is only a small voice in determining the outcome of each of those votes. Multiply that by hundreds of elected officials with different/overlapping time periods served, and itís hard to quantify this stuff on scale to decide who merits a bonus.

3. If the bonuses come at the end of said long term, the politicians will have long retired/been voted out. Itís hard to tempt someone with a vague promise down the road, where thereís an opportunity in the here and now to partner with specific interests, vote a certain way, introduce certain bills, and your campaign is well funded for the next election.

As I said, itís a theory. Theories canít have sources, else they wouldnít be theories, but facts.

Thanks for sharing, I skimmed it and it didnít seem very compelling/thought through. I think 0 would change if the US raised the presidents salary to $10mm/year. Make it $100mm/year and it will just fund the next generations of the Great American Political Machine.

Of course they will make it a political issue.
To do it right it needs to be on a national level with the government running it. We seen the disaster with PPE's and should learn from our mistakes. States getting into bidding wars with each other and the federal government. It would have been best for the government to buy everything and then distribute it.

This is just another blunder for the administration. They know they have failed so far with testing and now what to put it on the states.

We can argue about this, but the reopening plan makes a lot of sense.  And the bailout obviously was not enough but a lot was done in a very short time.  I think long term obviously we will see blunders because we are humans, but overall people will approve of trump's approach.

Itís clear that the approaches taken by different cities/states were what mattered. Look at California vs. NY.

At the end of the day states have more power than the federal government in implementing distancing laws etc. so itís unfair to blame Trump for the failures of some states

The point is testing is the key to reopening. We need to that on a mass level. Saying we did 3 million test on a nation of 300mm+ is massive failure. This needs to be a national effort run by the government. Putting it off on the states is the blunder.

As far as Trumps response and his approval of it we will find out.
