Surgical mask are effective and a no brainer to wear.

I was presenting it as an either or situation. I was responding to a poster who claimed that masks are "not that effective" and the only way I could imagine him seeing that somewhere was in an either/or discussion.  So I started with that, but tried (not very effectively?) to segue into the more comprehensive answer you gave.
