I was sitting outside a Trader Joe's yesterday on Long Island (tell me you're a husband without telling me you're a husband), and it was interesting to watch even those who did mask immidiately pull them off their faces as they walked out the door.

Not just a majority, an overwhelming majority. Especially odd when you consider that the vast majority of people in this area probably got the vaccine
Gotta say, I expected stragglers, but it's crazy to see everyone in a store like Heinen's still masking.

Even crazier was that while my son's Beachwood baseball team (100% frum kids) was maskless for their game, the Orange team (besides for the coaches) were fully masked. And it was hot!

Is it possible the "will of the people" is based primarily on the media's insatiable appetite for fear porn?
It's hard to go from "you're a murderer for not wearing a mask" one week to "you're free to go as you please the next.

Or in other words, people are having a hard time adjusting to the realization that government official policy wasn't truthful, while not wanting to consider themselves conspiracy theory kooks.

I'm really not understanding some of the posts on this thread.

A) 42% of the country is fully vaccinated.
B) Vaccinations are great for reducing spread and minimizing the severity of the illness, but they don't eliminate spread or provide immunity from Covid.
C) The world is full of ignorant, stupid, and extreme people (and people who check more than one of those boxes).

Personally, when in a well-ventilated indoor space with lots of room, I only wear a mask if ~40% of the people are masked. It's not for me; it's a courtesy. It makes people feel safer and it doesn't bother me. When in a crowded or poorly-ventilated indoor space, I wear a mask for me, for a few reasons. Being vaccinated means I'd likely be asymptomatic if I did have Covid, and I'd rather not pass it to anyone else unknowingly. I also have unvaccinated kids, and I don't want to pass anything on to them. For myself, I still haven't seen any data about long-term effects of Covid on vaccinated people, so I don't mind taking minimal precautions to avoid getting it. It doesn't bother me anymore when others aren't masked, but I don't get why so many are bothered by seeing masks. Are the people wearing them stupid? Maybe. Extreme? Also possible. They could also be ignorant, or maybe even all of the above. Who cares?

The ones that are upset at people wearing masks are basically the same ones who complained about masks while thousands were dying each day. They have an agenda.

I can make a list of ten items and most of them would qualify for 8 or more.

Masks are a symbol. For those that wear, it's often virtue-signaling*. They care about Covid so much, want people to live, and don't fall for the conspiracy theories, etc. - unlike the others. For those that don't mask, it's a way to express how upset they are about how covid restrictions were imposed irrationally upon them, and severely ruined their lives in numerous ways. Getting accosted by virtue-signaling extremists for mask noncompliance in situations where masking was almost entirely useless (such as kids outdoors) made them all-the-more disdainful toward wearing masks in situations where they were necessary, such as davening and singing for hours indoors.

*Virtue-signaling is a *good thing*. Why wouldn't you want to signal and behave virtuously? If the signaling runs counter to your actual behavior in other areas or is used to cover up unvirtuous beliefs, that's where the issue comes in.

All of this is true, but I don't see people here complaining about being accosted for not wearing a mask now. What I'm seeing is a general disbelief and mockery of those still wearing masks, and I don't get it. If people wanted to have a policy of live-and-let-live while a pandemic was raging and people's lives were in danger, why drop that standard when the stakes are so much lower?

I have no problem with what people do. I am just genuinely surprised that at this point vaccinated people in Ohio where there is no requirement, are still wearing. As Dan mentioned above, I figured there would be a few who continued for a while, but it's surprising that most are still wearing.

+1, though I'll admit to being bothered by my 9 year old's opposing ballclub all wearing masks in 90 degree heat when their coaches and parents watching didn't.

I also find it odd to see 99% of shoppers at the grocery store still wearing a mask.

Wouldn't CDC guidelines recommend masking for unvaccinated 9 year olds?

Yes, but there is major pushback now. Even states like NY, which are super conservative about masking, are going against such recommendations.

...and there is only an upside to wearing them.
Because you are an angel that is not bothered by a piece of fabric sitting on the places you inhale and exhale from in the sweltering heat. There is also no upside to a vaccine if you sit locked in cell with no human contact.

But... they prolong the restrictions with their submissiveness - it projects fear & anxiety onto others - maintains an anti-social norm - not being able to see faces and expressions is bad for communication and development - unhygienic - bad for the environment

How much is that influenced by the current conditions? It seems to me that this would (understandably) bother you regardless of vaccinations.

So much to unwrap here...

A) There are no restrictions. There are little-to-no mask mandates. They aren't "submitting" to anything, and their "submission" isn't extending restrictions that aren't there to begin with.

B) If you experience fear or anxiety when you see someone wearing a mask, the problem is yours, not the person wearing the mask. You should really seek professional help for that.

C) Bad for communication? We should ban sunglasses. The eyes are the most expressive part of the face.

D) "Unhygenic" - are we really still on this? What's next? Masks cause people to breathe in too much carbon dioxide?

E) Bad for the environment. Yep. I'd love to take a peek inside your environmentally friendly house.
