I'm a member and I'm more than willing to pay $28 per month to a group of verified, needy orphans and widows, for as long as it takes. I am a big fan of Areivim, and my respect only grew with this decision.

Yes, but can all of these almanos and yesomim wait as long as it takes for them to bill all of it?

B"H millions are coming in & good for them.. hopefully it makes it easier.. Areivim will be a good boost whenever they get it

I once saw that stats. I believe they collect about 6 or 7 months each year, on average. It can probably be looked up somewhere.

It's also possible that they'll get large donations for corona.
That doesn’t jibe with my experience, I can try to check my statements or emails but I’m pretty confident it’s been 28 a month straight for the last couple of years since I joined

They will definitely need it long before then. The amounts getting raised by these sites now is nowhere near what is raised in normal times. Not even half of what is raised when they have parlor meetings around Lakewood for these cases. That is partially due to it typically being around 2-3 a year and now it is many in a month, but also due to the lack of fundraising vehicles. How to deal with this when it ends is going to be a very big question which will need to be dealt with.

Do they hand over the 500k or whatever to family immediately or is it managed by some group? I'm guessing it's plenty of the same askanim managing many cases and they'll be running a full mutual fund with all these millions.

I am not quite sure I understand what you are saying but parlor meetings dont make $300k-$500k if I had to guess  :D
The money being raised are significant sums.. hopefully they have life insurance too, areivim etc. these amounts are definitely able to carry a family for a good few years..

The money from areivim is meant to be mainly for bar mitzvah, wedding etc. So yes, I hope they can wait. Most ppl don't need 100K per kid the second the lose a loved one, even if he was the breadwinner.
It's meant to stand the  on their feet for the long term, not the short term.

BTW rabbonim vet each recipient to make sure there is a need. I'm sure that they consider it a need 98 percent of the time, but if someone is really well off, they don't pay out. Perhaps if a corona campaign raises a million dollars, and they determine that it's sufficient for them, they may not pay out from Areivim, or they'll get pushed back until others are paid out.

correct, I heard recently (past 6 months I believe it was) of such an occurrence from Lakewood.

A quick check of my accounts seems to indicate that I've paid out 7 times in 2018 (all $28 besides one $7 and one $21) and 9 times in 2019 (all $28)

Or they'd R"L have to invoke this, per the Hamodia article:

The R”L is that they structured this in a way that they might have to bail on members, more proof this is insolvent and they should just pay up instead of keeping the ponzi scheme going further. Subsidize life insurance or try to find legal ways to create groups that get all members affordable term coverage. Better than selling people on something for years and then bailing on their family because the numbers didn’t add up.

Why don't the numbers add up? This is not life insurance - they don't claim to pay out for people who die of old age. I believe they only pay out as long as there are single children. The hope is that most members will never need to come onto the fund. It's just a way to give tzedakah to orphans without making a flashy campaign.

If a mod can actually move this entire discussion there, that would be great!

Good idea thanks, all campaigns are now noted with a # in the wiki so people can refer to it by number to @Iz etc
