How to keep school aged children productive during COVID-19
« on: April 02, 2020, 02:25:22 AM »
With the kids home for almost 3-weeks now and the end not clearly in sight . . . .

I'm interested in some ideas to keep kids not just busy (i.e. videos and computer games) but also productive and advancing their education/skills while isolated from friends and the full school experience. . .  that ideally does not require a constant level of parental oversight

Aside from
--The zoom/teleconference classes offered by schools (and ensuring kids are taking those seriously)
--Reading books available on-hand (public libraries are all closed)
--Helping with pesach cleaning/preparations

E.g. Any suggestions for good educational or skill-developing programming online or other activities

Khan Academy. For younger kids (first grade, or maybe a little younger depending on the kid) they have a very good app with tons of educational and interactive content. And for older kids, they have courses on the website, though the younger grades don't have much beyond math and a little grammar.

On TorahAnytime Rabbi Jonathan Rietti put up 2 beautiful high interest videos with exciting music and video animation and footage bringing to live the 6 days of Creation https://www.torahanytime.com/#/lectures?v=106977 and the creation of Manhttps://www.torahanytime.com/#/lectures?v=106585. Each is about 30 minutes long

When presented correctly and accompanied with an incentive program, there are 2 skills that are both very satisfying even thrilling, and of course very practical. They are mastering pictorial mnemonics and mental math. I am new to the forums and do not know how and if attachments can be made, but if it is possible send me the instructions how to do this and I will bli neder that's without a promise try to post  pdf files, that can train your children in these two extremely useful skills / disciplines.

ketch-noting
is a very useful skill to master as well. If your kids need to brush up their basic drawing skills the best to learn from is Ed Emberly and Rachel Goldstien both in a league of their own.
