thanks. I thought that option was for emergency travel - but flyingace said he's flying in 3 weeks. I have appointments in 3 weeks but looking to travel in 10 weeks. will be cutting very tight even with expedited. is the passport office an option this early?

Your appointment needs to be within 14 days of your flight. You can apply at the post office and then make an appointment if it’s not back in time.

Book a dummy refundable flight and now your flight is within a week. Be creative.

Why waste time and effort. Do it once at the passport office and no need to sit and check every day for an update if you do in the post office, and no need to waste as extra $35 for the service fee in both places.

Also when I went in DC they never asked to see my flight itinerary or confirmation. But would be really silly to be turned away because you were lazy to book and cancel a refundable fare. I just booked a flight within 24hrs on priceline.

They didn’t ask, just made it clear when you show up you must have a ticket for within 14 days. Booked and changed when I had a firm travel date. Seems to be not so challenging right now. I guess if it wouldn’t have worked out I would’ve gotten creative….

I went to the post office with my kids for renewals/new passports on 3/3, I have a flight to Israel 5/21. Did regular service, and was told the it would be on time. At this point it's showing online as processing. At which point do I have to nervous/call to expedite?

You can call whenever, I would book an appointment for same day at a passport office for a day or two before your flight just in case....

No. You call a passport center in a city and make an appointment yourself. You pay for expedited but you have to go down yourself.

Can you please give an example? From what I'm told you can only make appointments by calling the national number and they only issue appointments within 2 weeks and don't have a lot of options once you're closer in than that.

They issue appointments within two weeks of your flight afaik. Did you try? My son and nephew both got appointments in Philly that worked for them. Not sure what else you need to know…

Expedited means 8-11 weeks while standard is 11-13 weeks. Something g along those lines.
 Hopefully you understand the difference.
 While getting a same day appointment you get the passport the same day to take home.

Yes, they do give appointments within 2 weeks of your flight, however, they only do that if you haven't applied yet. If you already applied, they only allow you to schedule an appointment within 5 business days of your flight, and, with the current backlog, there are no appointments available within 5 days of your flight in the NYC area unless you are ready to go to Buffalo or pay $$$ for those with existing appointments.

I'm saying all this after having spent 5-6 hours on the phone over the last few days. My application finally switched to approved today.

BTW it's 7 days, they tell you 5. And call 8am on the button like the wiki in the expedited thread to get the new appointments that became avlb for the 7th day.

It's 5 business days which usually equals 7 days.

I tried calling 8 sharp multiple times with no success. Are you sure they open more appointments 5 business days out? My impression was that they open them two weeks out (for those that didn't apply yet) and with the current backlog there are none left by the time you can call.
