Dan's post describing his experience

After signing up for a Travel.gov account, it takes about 2.5-3 weeks for the invite to be able to renew online.

Mailed in my application for a passport renewal today, from NJ to PA.
Paid $7.70 for priority mail with tracking number & insurance.
Will update when I get my new passport.

That's pretty fast for the current situation.

Is it possible to make an appointment at the US embassy for a baby who hasn’t been born yet? I’m worried that by the time the baby is born, it will be too hard to get an appointment before Sukkos. Has anyone ever done such a thing?

Went in today, very smooth. Let's see if it actually takes 6 weeks

Welp. That took a long time. Just came today.

Someone I know applied 2 months ago & just received a letter that both the photo and one form of ID wasn't good.
What's really strange is that the application was done entirely through the post office & they photographed the person and said all the IDs were ok.
Of course, the check was already cashed & the post office (Jackson, NJ) doesn't answer their phones.
Is this normal?
Should he just go down to the post office or schedule a new appointment?
Will the person have to pay the post office for new photos?

PO not answering phones is very normal. That's why I avoid the PO with any passport matters

Same experience, took a month. The status tracker says to call if it's not showing up in the system after 2 weeks, which made me nervous, but it showed up after 4 weeks without calling. Things can be randomly slow I guess. The actual approval and shipping of the passports happened less than a week later. This was for in-person appointments. My renewal by mail experience took 3 weeks to show up in the system, and then 12 weeks(!) before any change in status.

No, they said to mail in new photos and ID.
The person (rightly) feels that after paying the PO for the photos, they should get new photos for free.
The person has no other ID beside what was sent in already, which the PO said was acceptable. (The issue is a student ID card issued by a Yeshiva.)

Not sure why people pay for photos.....
Did he sent in his birth certificate?

How else? Take it yourself? If even the PO can mess up, it's really risky to do it yourself.

I believe not. An old passport (when he was a child) was sent in.

Take picture yourself, use free online (or app) utility to get the right size and everything in place. Use paint / photoshop if needed to fix background.
Print in pharmacy for 30-40 cents.

PO doesn’t care about you if they mess up (although they may give you another free print if you ask). When you print it yourself you make sure everything meets the official criteria before submitting.

I do my pictures myself (technically I have someone take the picture from me as selfies are not allowed)
you see the worst case if they rejected you can always mail another one

but I never understood the highway robbery of paying $10/15 for such a picture
