“your baby does not need a social security number to get a passport (and neither do you, for that matter). However, if your baby (or whomever the applicant is) has a social security number, US Government regulations 22 U.S.C. 2714a and 22 C.F.R 51.60(f) requires you to provide your Social Security number, if you have one, when you apply for a U.S. passport or renewal of a U.S. passport”

Definitely not. None of my children had SSNs when receiving their first passport.

How long should it take to receive the birth certificate after the passport. It's been about 4 weeks since the passport was delivered but still waiting on the birth certificate.  Any worries if it was stolen from the mail?

Detroit.  It came over the weekend. Roughly 5 weeks after the passport came and about 2 months after application

I must have misunderstood your question. I was actually wondering what your passport application had to do with the issuance of the birth certificate. I figure now you must mean that the BC used for the passport application did not come back together with the passport. Glad it all came in the end.

When you renew online, you will need your most recent passport with you. You get to keep your old passport. Unlike the current renewal process, you are not going to mail us any documents when you renew online. Right after you submit your application, we will invalidate your most recent passport, and you cannot use it for international travel.

Seems like there’s no point in renewing online, if you can’t use your passport after submitting your application

It's probably entered in the system faster. You don't have to wait for someone to press the buttons for you. Also, if someone needs their passport as general photo ID then this way leaves it in their hands.
