i had a "huge ateres avrohom type of event" (at ateres avrohom). it was very nice, but a total waste of money. nonjewish friends talk about their fantastic getaway weddings with only close family and friends and the price is cheaper, and i tell them yeah, i got married in a basement in williamsburg with 500 people (of which i was friendly with about 100)...

All the discussions on this topic are missing the primary evil. People have to be educated to be more responsible financially. How they make their Simcha's will be a result of that.

Living up to what others do isn't inherently damaging. The problem is spending irresponsibly. There will always be one temptation or another to spend.

Have weddings start earlier.

Let’s say 2:30pm start time, chuppah at 3:30pm. Invite everyone!!! Only people who really need to be there will find a way to come. Everyone else can come for a huge buffet and dancing at ~6 pm.

This will also solve the issue of weddings ending late at night…

People won't be going to the chupah and meal unless they really need to there. They would have to decide that this is too important to miss and need to take off work.

If you dont must be there, you wont 

And if you want to come later in the wedding to say mazel tov, all are invited!

Okay so move everything 1 hour later...the point is the new normal will be for the general public to come after badeken, chuppah, pictures, some of the meal. This will also save people hours of time wasted waiting and waiting and won't cost everyone their entire night.
