Hidden city checked luggage
« on: September 09, 2012, 04:28:46 AM »
Friend of mine did hidden city from Dtw to bwi stopping in pHl. He checked luggage. When he got to pHl he told the very friendly us airways rep that he will not be continuing his journey. They said no problem and took his luggage off the plane. Should i risk checking luggage on my upComing hidden city trip?

If its an overnight stopover you prob could check luggage and just tell the, by check in that you need your stuff overnight.

Domestic stops are generally limited to 4 hours or less.

You can check your luggage halfway lechatchila at least on Delta (I confirmed this with numerous phone reps before I flew) just did this 2 Weeks ago
I only had a 45 minute layover I think and so the TA started telling me there won't be enough time to recheck it and even if there is I'll have to pay twice so I explained that a very important part of my trip is this stop and I'll mail my luggage UPS if I have to but I need it when I land in dtw she told me fine and only put a baggage tag till dtw in my luggage
This was at HPN where everyone is really nice but I confirmed it with a phone rep so it should work everywhere

No I wouldn't. ;)

My point was that one cannot rely on getting an overnight connection to enable luggage checking, since most hidden-city tickets do not involve those (since they can be difficult to get altogether). And even if you do, it's still YMMV. What're you gonna do if it doesn't work? Have TrackItBack bring your luggage back home? ;)

Hypnotising the rep at check-in works for me.

Problem is when they are asleep by the time you get there

That's even easier, there are two possibilities:

1. They work in their sleep, so I get them to upgrade me etc.

2. If they don't respond, I wake them up.

I don't think they like #2 as much as you do

Wanna do hidden city FLL - EWR - CVG on UA booked as a Multi City. The EWR - CVG is the throwaway segment. Question; Since it's booked via the Multi City option, can I get my luggage at EWR? The layover is less than 2 hours. Can I request it at check in?

It will probably get booked through. Don't check luggage.

Problem! It's for my parents and Grandpa, they were booked on AA via BA, but Grandpa was admitted to the hospital earlier today, so I need to re-book them for today still. The have lots of luggages... UA hidden city is the cheapest. Any advice?

hope your grandpa gets better, but realistically, when dealing with family who may or may not be as understanding of hidden city, why risk it, technically you are already going against every T&C of airline rules with hidden city, but 99% of the time, airlines don't make a big deal, an unwritten rule of hidden city tickets is just use carryons. Shipping luggage to your real final destination might be something to take into consideration... lot of luggage, hidden city and elder passengers... no offense, but that a recipe for disaster!
I'm not playing airline defense here, but don't believe that somehow an airline agent will believe that all X amount of bags must be picked up in city XYZ before going to ABC...
if you want to play hidden city games, play by the rules (no carryon, etc)...

Try to find FLL-EWR, LGA/JFK-CVG. Should be the same price, and the airport change will force you to claim your bags.

If I'm coming in from yyz to Bos. Walk away at NYC. Will I get my checked baggage in nyc? Even though you clear customs in Canada.

I think you answered it. You will not get luggage back in NYC when you do customs in Canada. For all intents and purposes,  it becomes a domestic connection.
