Recommendations for WiFi 6 Mesh - for Fios Gigabit
« on: April 19, 2020, 12:54:01 AM »
I am getting frustrated with my current fios router that delivers only a fraction of my gigabit speed and has dead spots all over my home. Looking into purchase my own router and was thinking of Google Mesh. Then, I ran into WiFi 6. Any recommendations for a good and also affordable WiFi 6 router/mesh?

I actually just got the asus ZenWiFi AX wifi 6 router for my fios connection. It's been in for a week but haven't had a chance to put it through its paces yet.

It is not - that is the reason I am having second thoughts about ordering it

At this stage it's worth future proofing as prices have come down.

If you do decide to go wifi 5, I am selling my Eero system.

Were you happy with your Eero system? What kind of speeds were you getting from your gigabit connection with it?

You can try going enterprise grade if you're up to it. Costs are higher though. Ubiquiti is much cheaper than anyone else though.

I was capped at around 250 which is the wifi 5 limitation. Now I am still setting it up properly so I am getting around 350 on zenwifi but I expect to egt around 600 once I figure out the kinks.

Ubiquiti is by no means cheap once you get a complete system. It's also more complicated to set up.

If it's too complicated, it probably isnt for me.

Depends what you're comparing them to. I wouldn't say they're complicated at all but to each their own.

Not complicated for me either, but I am technically inclined. It is by no means an out of the box consumer offering.

very highly rated router, you can also add https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1437656-REG/synology_mr2200ac_mesh_wifi_router.html to turn it into a mesh system, but depending on the size of your house the router might be enough.

For that price you might as well buy a true mesh system. One with a third channel for backhaul only.

Anyone have any experience with a non mesh WIFI 6 router?
Would something like this be better then a WiFi 5 mesh system?
I've heard it said that mesh routers loose bandwidth on the non-base units, so I assume for a relatively small house one WiFi 6 router should be the way to go.
