I didn't say it's not important. But to say that they really rely on it in the context of questioning how long they can hold out with current policies during a public health emergency, is just not accurate.

No country can cut out 6 percent of its GDP for an extended period of time.

I assume that 6% doesn't include all the money coming in from the seminary students and yeshiva bochrim or from the chutznik young couples that aren't there now so the impact is really more than that

Iceland cited earlier is much higher than 6 percent if I had to guess.

From Wikipedia

Tourism in Iceland has grown considerably in economic significance in the past 15 years. As of 2016, the tourism industry is estimated to contribute about 10 percent to the Icelandic GDP;[1] the number of foreign visitors exceeded 2,000,000 for the first time in 2017; tourism is responsible for a share of nearly 30 percent of the country's export revenue.[2]

Seychelles bans cruise ships through 2021.
Here's hoping that non cruise ship tourists will be allowed in a lot earlier

Iceland tourism is 30% of export sales (critical for forex)
Israel tourism is 5% of export sales

What differentiates between export sales and GDP? Domestic tourism?

Cruise ships don't matter to me much but regular international flights do. :)

Good question - it should be a similar absolute number, but GDP is measured as percentage of total output, whereas percentage of export sales is only percentage of their exports.

The only way I can understand that Israel is both 5% of GDP and 5% of export sales is if export sales is measuring revenue on a broader basis than GDP, but it's more likely my numbers are wrong.

The point is probably still true, Iceland needs tourism for Forex much more than Israel does, because Israel get far more Forex from other exports

What is the current US policy on flights to/from China?

Funny how they’re offering an “incentive” to airlines when no passengers on a route test positive for COVID for three weeks, because we all know how trustworthy the Chinese are when it comes to COVID data...
