if i buy something through the chase bonus mall for example on gap, thereby receiving a bonus 4 points/$. when i return the item do they remove those bonus points?

It states that you do but many including myself have had luck with using any CC. YMMV.

I once spent $500 at Jos a Bank on my chase card but did not go through the Chase UR link (which offers 5% at jos).  I subsequently sm'd them and they credited my account with 2500 pts.  I ended up returning the suits but obviously got to keep the points.
