Is there any literature about COVID leading to degenerative neurological diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's or ALS? Most of what I saw was to debunk a conspiracy theory of mRNA vaccines causing them.

Anecdotally, I know of someone with no prior history who had a rapid degeneration with ALS post COVID despite having been treated immediately with monoclonal antibodies.

No prior history of what? ALS? They got covid, then rapid onset of ALS symptoms and diagnosis?

correct. This person had COVID within the last 9 months and within a few weeks began having symptoms of ALS which degenerated relatively rapidly.

Wow. Always thought ALS was a slow moving (years) disease.

Unfortunately that seems to be incorrect.

Yes and no.  There has been some mention of Parkinsons and Alzheimers, but I don't think anything definitive yet - more like seeing cognitive changes or biochemical changes that may be somewhat similar.  Not enough time to say anything definite, and of course these diseases are common so need a large number to decide whether related to covid or just coincidentally occurred this year.

ALS I haven't seen written about, but it's much rarer than the others.  It might be coincidental, or it could be that it had begun unnoticed, and covid accelerated it.

I'll see if I can find the references.

COVID-19–accelerated disease progression in two patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
published June 15 2021
78 yo diagnosed in 2016, 66 yo diagnosed 2006. Both progressed slowly till soon after got Covid.
"We theorize that the ability of COVID-19 to trigger neuroinflammation3 may have played a role in our patients' accelerated declines. "

Not for the faint of heart.  These are the faintest of preliminary clues that there's something to look at, but it's much too early to conclude that there's a relationship to covid.

Doctors Worry That Memory Problems After COVID-19 May Set The Stage For Alzheimer's
https://www.knau.org/post/doctors-worry-memory-problems-after-covid-19-may-set-stage-alzheimers

" PET scans taken before and after a person develops COVID-19 suggest that the infection can cause changes that overlap those seen in Alzheimer's. And genetic studies are finding that some of the same genes that increase a person's risk for getting severe COVID-19 also increase the risk of developing Alzheimer's."

Can a Coronavirus Infection Lead to Dementia?
https://www.aarp.org/health/dementia/info-2021/covid-dementia.html

"one study found that as many as 1 in 3 COVID-19 survivors experience a mental health or neurological disorder within six months of a coronavirus infection. Another study discovered that about half of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 had altered brain function or structure."

Is there a link between COVID-19 and Parkinson’s disease?
https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/is-there-a-link-between-covid-19-and-parkinsons-disease

" three people with COVID-19 have also experienced Parkinson’s-like symptoms.

Two men, aged 45 and 58 years, and one woman, aged 35 years, reported slowness of movement accompanied by muscle stiffness, muscle spasms, irregular eye movement, and tremor.

All three showed reduced function of the brain’s dopamine pathway system on imaging tests. Two of the three responded positively to medication and one recovered spontaneously.

None had a family history or clinical signs of Parkinson’s disease before their illness."

Seems to be consistent with other numbers I’ve seen.
I think the major unknown variable is a control group - what percentage of kids who didn't have Covid complain of the same symptoms?

That was my thoughts exactly. I'm not convinced that these numbers mean anything at all

THV11.com KTHV: Arkansas researchers find possible cause of long-lasting COVID-19 symptoms.

I wonder how it can tie into the reports of the vaccine helping long covid symptoms. Maybe the vaccine increases some antibodies while allowing others including the long covid culprit to decrease.
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Or the immune system regulates itself.

How does the vaccine affect that?
