Since Google might not be helpful, this is one Talmudic way of explaining two apparently contradictory statements quoted in the name of the same person. In the Talmudic context the person quoted lived generations ago, and the quotes were passed down orally. Since we can’t ask them to explain the apparent contradiction, we suggested that these are two traditions based on how two different disciples understood their master who is being quoted.
