You have to know the political dynamics between the different factions in willi and the mayor. This statement reeks from political expediency and IMHO is shameful.

While the actions of the people attending the levaya may have been wrong the Mayors actions were definitely wrong. Both his publicly calling out "the Jewish community" instead of the individuals involved and also the retaliation that took place afterwards by targeting Jewish neighborhoods for enforcement. This is institutionalized antisemitism at it's worst. Not to mention the dpuble standard he is applying.

If the the mayor did nothing wrong, there is no need to come on to the reason of 'genuine hakaras hatov' in order to justify such a letter.

However, if the mayor did commit an anti-semitic act, which is the obvious case here, there is "zero" justification to be choinef a rasha because of past/future favors.

Bottom line, hakaras hatov is irrelevant.

Their mistake is that his faux pas involved the broader Jewish community (anyone Jewish in NYC, and arguably anyone Jewish anywhere). They don’t get to decide for others whether he gets a free pass on that, and the fact that they think they do shows they totally missed the point and are sucking up to their bigoted benefactor.

The Satmar voting bloc is legendary. It is possibly one of the only true voting blocs in NY, with universal support for their candidates. They have been aligned with DeBlasio for some time now. That should give some perspective on the letter and why many here are taking it with a bucket of salt.

Everyone does it, just usually on an individual level. Which candidate
benefits me and advances my vision for me, my family, my world? In those communities, the leaders generally make those decisions for the masses. And because they have 10k+ votes, they utilize the leverage to secure promises from candidates in exchange for the bloc's vote.
