One line summary:
Areivim USA is a dignified way to give צדקה. It is not Life Insurance and doesn't guarantee any sort of financial protection to its members. it is registered as a religious organization and as such isn't required to incur the additional cost of preparing and filing form 990 with the IRS.

I spoke to Areivim at length as I sell life insurance and wanted to best advise ppl that had Areivim already and wanted to supplement it with LI.
I was told that it has never happened that Areivim declined to pay out based on someones assets or LI. It has happened that the family told them they don't need the money, but they never told the family no.
Simple reasoning is, they also think that 100K per yasom doesn't really cover it, the program just won't allow for a higher payout at $28/ monthly. So they encourage everyone to have LI as well to make sure kids are adequetly covered, and owning LI does not disqualify a payout [unless each kid will receive over a million dollars etc].

Areivim Terms and Conditions (emphasis added):
Quote
4) Areivim USA is not life insurance. Areivim USA has been established primarily as a charitable endeavor and its halachic status is like that of all tzedakah money collected from the public. In the event of a the passing of a member r”l, all contributions can be made with maaser money.

5) In the event of (G-d forbid) a large number of deaths among members (as a result of a war, an earthquake, etc.), Areivim USA reserves the right to consult with its Rabbinical Board on proper procedures.

6) Members have no rights to sue or submit legal claims against the decisions of Areivim USA or its Rabbinical Board, including for failure to initiate a collection. You also need to factor in the rate of members children getting married maybe higher risk of death but payout would be lower because they married off half of everyone children.
Are these numbers known and calculated?

Most of these questions could be answered pretty easily with some basic transparency that every 501c3 needs to show

That can change in 6 weeks

Your point being?

IME a diabetic that doesn't know his A1c (last few readings) likely has very poor control and shouldn't be insured. If they didn't inquire as to details of the diabetes, then they are accepting people who present a substantially higher mortality risk.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I have asked  R Binumin Landau who is a very smart and thorough ruv.

He thought that it is extremely sustainable if the purpose is charity

1. This is why you consult financial experts on financial matters, or at least make sure Rabbis are informed by them.
2. As stated previously, how does the fact that’s it’s charity make it any more sustainable?

I believe the theory is that lack of clear financial viability won't cause people to drop out if they consider it charity with no expectations of getting paid, thereby ensuring that there will always be donors even if the payouts are lagging. Organization sustained.

There is a level of transparency. Recently, every collection had the name of a rav who is overseeing it. If a DDFer has a few minutes and wants to do a good deed, please call one of these rabbanim and hear firsthand about the collection, than report back here. I'll post the names of the last few collections.

April 28, 2020: We are hereby notifying you that due to the tragic passing of an Areivim Member from Lakewood, NJ who left behind a widow and 10 orphans we will be initaiting a collection on behalf of the family in the months of May and June.  This collection will be under the auspices of Rabbi Yechiel Rabinowitz, Rav D'Khal Tiferes Shimon.

Feb. 26, 2020: It is with great pain that we notify you of the recent untimely Petirah of two Areivim USA members, one from the Tosher Kehilla leaving behind 2 orphans R''l, and one from the Satmar Kehilla leaving behind a Widower and 7 orphans R''l.Therefore Areivim USA members are requested to donate in the months of March and April. Harav Yoel Hersh Moskowitz Shlita, Dayan  from Kiryas Tosh will be overseeing the collection on behalf of the Tosher family. Harav Yoel Teitelbaum Shlita Rav D'Bais Medrash Bais Boruch will be overseeing the collection on behalf of the Satmar family.

Nov. 28, 2019: It is with great pain that we notify you of the recent untimely Petirah of two Areivim USA members, one from Manchester leaving behind 7 orphans R''l, and one from the Lubavitcher Kehilla leaving behind 7 orphans R''l.Therefore Areivim USA members are requested to donate in the months of December, January and February. Harav Avrohom Yosef Halevi Heller Shlita, Rosh Kollel Avreichim and Moreh Tzedek in Crown Heights will be overseeing the collection on behalf of the Lubavitcher family. Harav Berel Cohen Shlita Rav D’Khal Ohr Yerushalayim of Manchester will be overseeing the collection on behalf of the Manchester family.

This raises more questions!

1- “Areivim USA” is paying out to someone in Manchester!?! Is Manchester in the USA?

2- Do they ever bill anything less than $28 in any given month? (Steady patterns are unnatural. Perhaps there is some extra collected to minimize credit card processing fees, but I have not seen disclosure on that, have you).

3- If there is an $8 million backlog already reported why are they mentioning just 1 family in the April 28, 2020 email? How can they put that family ahead of the others? Is that family really going to get the money before others? Are they committing to give all the money to that member?

Let’s see them publish numbers on how many members balk when they suddenly want $400.

“Areivim USA” and “Areivim UK” pool the members

One thing jumps out at me right away- I was not charged in August 2019, but I was charged in October. Other than that, looks about right. This is the statement of an organization that cannot handle mass casualty events, and needs to find a solution.

It is much deeper. This is a statement of an organization that is just about maxed out. over the 2 years covered there were 5 payment missed. They have the capabilities of hancling two additional families per year without defaulting. Another way of looking at it is that they can handle the average family size going up by a bit more than 2.

over the past 2 years they collected 79% of the maximum collection, is that so unhealthy?

YES

Also, which is the more indicative year, the most recent or the one before it? What has the longer term trend been?

I wouldn't make assumptions based on 1 year, we would need to see the past 5-10 years.

That sounds odd that there would be different charges to different members in different months? Anyone else have similar data to share?

Anyone want to share/verify the details provided on beneficiaries were the same? If there are differences there . . . E.g. those in crown heights told the death is Manchester and those in Manchester told the death is in crown heights. . . That would make it pretty obvious something is wrong here.

I really don’t think there is any fraud going on here, I was pointing out a minor discrepancy. Many prominent Rabbanim hold of and support them, and I think there is substantial oversight.

I just think they’re making some mathematical errors.

Major difference between this and LI is that in LI you always make payments, even when losses are low. This allows companies to build reserves (which accumulate interest as well) for these tail events. Had Areivim done this (and not invested the money in SUNGAMES) their liquidity/solvency would be in a much better position.

Playing catch up next few years may hopefully work but wouldn't get them an AMBEST A++.

I'm also curious where the line is drawn with regards to not being subject to DOI regulations/oversight.
