One line summary:
Areivim USA is a dignified way to give צדקה. It is not Life Insurance and doesn't guarantee any sort of financial protection to its members. it is registered as a religious organization and as such isn't required to incur the additional cost of preparing and filing form 990 with the IRS.

I spoke to Areivim at length as I sell life insurance and wanted to best advise ppl that had Areivim already and wanted to supplement it with LI.
I was told that it has never happened that Areivim declined to pay out based on someones assets or LI. It has happened that the family told them they don't need the money, but they never told the family no.
Simple reasoning is, they also think that 100K per yasom doesn't really cover it, the program just won't allow for a higher payout at $28/ monthly. So they encourage everyone to have LI as well to make sure kids are adequetly covered, and owning LI does not disqualify a payout [unless each kid will receive over a million dollars etc].

everyone pays $5 per orphan, members and sponsors.

I’m confused. So why do they raise funds in $7 increments?

when they started they were planning to cap the group at 14.5K members so that would be $7 per orphan, in the end they decided to make a larger group and they have now 20K members so its only $5 per orphan. They still charge in $7 increments because they can raise the money faster.

In short, it's subsidized (elsewhere it says 50% of costs are paid by the government), and not every eligible institution has to join.
While it's optional for the institution, it's not voluntary participation of the students. And from what I read there is no extra government funding for this, it will come out of the funding allocated to the ministry of education for the Koilelim. A koilel that chooses to join will see its cash funding reduced to offset the premiums.

There's a reason this is championed by a populist MK and opposed to by veteran monetary committee chairman Moshe Gafni.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

If that's what defines Moshiach times, as far as I'm concerned we've been there for a long while. I will give praise where it's due regardless of background or affiliation.

Lehavdil, I've even praised Cuomo where praise was due, despite background and affiliation.

Regardless of whether the government is subsidizing the insurance or not, i see a high value in them ensuring that ppl who may not otherwise purchase coverage will have it at more affordable rates. Kudos to the chareidi politicians who pushed it thru.

Anyone know if any schools/kollels in the US have a similar program?

I'm not familiar with the Israeli insurance market, but I can tell you that group term insurance might not competitive with an individual term policy for an individual classified as a preferred risk.

Are you referring to the 125,000 of coverage provided to every educator in NYC Jewish schools by the Gruss Foundation?

With your attitude, no one should contribute to any fundraiser as all are run and distributed by "prominent Rabanim"

Just heard from Arievim that one of the people that died from Covid19, left behind a big family, when he signed up originally he signed that he only wants to give and not get a payout if he dies because he had a nice amount of LI, in the last year he was struggling and left his LI lapse.
They are still deciding how to go about it.....

Got a letter from them saying that, as per the direction of their Rabbonim, they are beginning to charge $28 twice a month, on the first and the fifteenth. They wrote that if you can afford to, you can pay $450 now and stay with regular payments, and it helps get the money to the families quicker.

Got this today too.

Also states that if $28 twice a month is too much for you, you can spread out over more months.
Either way, everyone will be required to pay the extre 450.
