True for most animals, but not for birds. There have been countless studies that have shown that if a feeder disappears, a bird has no issue getting food by himself right away. There's a reason you'd find bird feeders in places like national parks and so on, where they are otherwise extremely strict about not getting the wildlife dependent on humans.

That's really interesting. From a quick Google search, it seems some species may even be helped by feeders.

I'm trying to remember if they have feeders in South African game reserves. I can't seem to recall such a thing.

If it was me who put up the feeders, מיין דאס would not be the one cleaning anything.

Who said cleaning? You wrote dealing! That is usually measured in decibels (and a stop watch)!
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Sounds like a nice idea, but there's no way my pictures will even come close to these, so instead I'll just follow this thread....

The thing with the hamster is that running on the wheel is actually what it is trying to do.

Does a bird feeder come with a daily subscription to car wash?

That's all i remember from my childhood with my neighbor feeding the birds.

Wow, these are beautiful birds. And, your pictures of them are just amazing.

How much would you say it costs to feed them?

I put up some feeders in my backyard, but the squirrels are a huge problem, I see these birds too, so beautiful & relaxing to watch with my binoculars

Squirrels can jump 10+ feet so keep that in mind when placing feeders.

As a kid, there was a little while that my father put food out in our yard and attracted dozens of birds. It was awesome. But then we were told that it makes the birds become too dependent on humans and we should stop. Is that a concern?

and attracted a flock of Hadedas' and never had to worry about waking up for minyan again......

Wake you up vs eating parktown prawns? Hmm, tough choice

Thanks!

Not counting the cost of the feeders themselves, I estimate I spend $10-20 on food per month.
