What is this bird? The stripe of color didn't come out well in this picture, but it's red in the front and yellow toward the back. A larger colored area is visible during flight.

Yes, and even now only a flyover.

They're only common here around big shopping centers and parking lots etc.

That's strange. I had them in my backyard growing up and wasn't near any of those.
