Any recommendations for a non-DIY one? I see a bunch on Amazon.

I've never really looked into them - they won't work with my setup - so I don't have a specific recommendation other than get something highly reviewed.

Maybe @lfas25 has some insight?

Looks like there are only two choices: ineffective or ugly
Ok, so which is the ugly one that is effective?

Any recommendation for thistle on Amazon? I don't see anything particularly cheap.

How about this?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000HASBOU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
Looks like the one @lfas25 has. But I think it will only work if you the pole has removal parts that allow you to slip this on.
If you don't care why would you comment?

Any recommendation for thistle on Amazon? I don't see anything particularly cheap.

Amazon is terrible for thistle, no idea why.

I've found that the best way to get them is in-store. Walmart has a generic that is my favorite (and also the cheapest at ~$1.30/lb)) - but it's available in-store only. I've never seen my local Walmart (Monsey) out of stock, even in winter when they don't have a lot of birdseed.

Another option is this from Tractor Supply Co., but only makes sense for store pickup as shipping is quite high. I haven't tried this particular seed, but I've been very happy with other seed from this brand. It's a touch more expensive than Walmart (~$1.40/lb) but might make sense depending on your location.

Finally, when looking for thistle, also check for Nyjer seed - same thing, different name.

Thanks. Do you think it will work with this?

Most poles ship in sections that screw into each other.

Sure will.

This is what I had on my original bird stand, worked pretty well, once in a rare while a squirrel managed to get around it, but for the most part it did the job.

I only paid 15% by switching to dansdeals

I used to do the "you must be a DDFer" nod to people I saw someone pull a specific credit card out of a huge stack at a specific store that had 5x points. Now it will be to a guy with binoculars, a birding book, and a wife in the background pulling hair out of her sheitel screaming "I'm going to kill that Fishy Whatever"
