Quick story time:
A couple of days ago, my kids found 4 chipmunks stuck, and drowning in the rain and water inside of a bucket in the backyard.
My guess is that it was a mother and 3 babies that had taken shelter before the storm started, and didn't realize the rain would fill it up.
When we dumped the bucket out, the one i think is the mother ran right underneath the shed, but the other three were just shivering uncontrollably and awkwardly squirming around. They looked like they would die from hypothermia.
I couldn't stand by while they suffered, and it was getting dark and cold out, so i put the three of them on top of each other (for added warmth) in a paper towel lined cardboard box. I stuck a couple of those hand/glove heat warmer pads to the inside walls, and crumbled some paper towel to put onto them for heat retention. I made a hole small enough for them to leave the box, but not big enough for a predator to snack on them, and then left for the night.
When i returned the next morning, i expected to see three dead chipmunks. To my surprise the box was empty.
I like to think we saved their lives, but i guess we will never really know.
