Just put out dried mealworms for the first time. Let's see who bites.
Who has been eating it?

I believe this was either an Eastern Phoebe or Eastern Wood-Pewee spotted today in my yard.

What do you guys think?

Links to compare:

https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Eastern_Wood-Pewee/overview

https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Eastern_Phoebe/id

If it is one of those that would make it species #43!

I wasn't able to get any great shots, but these should work for an ID.

Seems like this guy enjoyed the squirrels company more than the birds.

I'm gonna vote for pewee. The pheobes are a lot stockier.

I went back to see if any other pics i took gave more clues, and I now see from this angle that the underside of the bill is a yellow-orange.

On that note, i agree with your vote of Eastern Wood-Pewee. Thanks for your help!

Species #44 is the fairly common Northern Mockingbird, but first time visitor to our yard. (That we know of...)

Is it a young one? It's feathers look pretty battered.

Looks like it has some battle scars on it's chest in the second pic.

ETA: I found similar looking pics on Google and they labelled it "Juvenille"

I think so. Very subtle colors, probably a female.

The one I saw a few times now can be mistaken for a large insect.

Today we spotted what looked like a Blue Jay with a black head.

I was about to snap a pic when it flew away, and of course i missed it when it returned again.

From the little i saw, the rest of the body looked like a regular Blue Jay, it just had a black head.

I know its not a Steller's Jay based on their range, so I'm wondering if anyone knows what the deal might be?

I'm hoping it will return and I can get a decent pic.
