Sometimes I feel like I'm playing one of those hidden picture games, trying to find the bird in some of these pictures.

Lucky you! That's a rare sight!

I read somewhere that sometimes they will live on a single tree their entire lives.
Interesting! I'll look out for him again but he flew off as soon as I came close

Alol!

Taking a picture of a jumpy warbler hopping in and out of branches without the right camera equipment isn't a walk in the park!  :D

Started a wiki too.
Excellent!  Thank you.  Now how about a running list in the wiki of the best kind of bird food for the different classes of birds?

Am I understanding correctly that certain types of birds prefer certain types of feeders?

Literally the first post in the thread :D:

Here's my current setup:

(For the record, this is a composite photo of around 8 pictures from last Friday.)

1: Hopper feeder at top right, filled with seed mix. For sparrows, titmice, cardinals, and a little bit of everything else.
2: Perching tube feeder in the lower middle (with the yellow), filled with thistle seed. For goldfinches, house finches, chickadees.
3: Tray feeder just to the left of the tube, filled with safflower and whatever random thing I want to experiment with. For juncos, cardinal, wrens, bluejays, catbirds, doves, and more.
4: Suet cage (straight on top of the tray), filled with suet cakes. For woodpeckers, nuthatches, grackles, and starlings.
5: Oriole feeder all the way to the left, with orange halves and grape jelly. For orioles and warblers.

Ruby-crowned kinglet is back. Has anyone seen one wearing his ruby crown? According to allaboutbirds it comes out when they are excited. How do we excite them?

Species #30: Red-breasted Nuthatch. According to the allaboutbirds migration map, lower NY is right on the line between breeding and non-breeding so I guess spotting it mid-fall makes perfect sense.

My kids have gotten so good at IDing new species. We have white-breasted nuthaches all the time, and today my son comes running in screaming "we have a new bird!!"

We have a group of ~10 that are now coming every day. And we started noticing females as well together in the flock. (lighter)

Because they hadn't been around in a while we are still excited to see them, but I feel it will wear off soon.

Here is a pic of a female.

Compared to the male(s) in this post

The Dark-eyed Juncos have returned... Now daily visitors once again.

I don't think I would ID this bird. Looks too similar to so many others.

Haha! I hear that! It's actually pretty different looking in real life... (You can't really see the yellow in the pics, but was clear in person)

The sharp beak, and the one yellow streak on the wings are its biggest ID giveaways
