Northern Mocking Bird

1. Does it count if I spotted it up the block from my house?
2. How do I get them to my house?
If you don't care why would you comment?

Can somebody recommend a bird food or combination of food for Tampa, FL?  The last 2 bags of food that we purchased went to waste and has not attracted anybody.  We used to have birds but not lately.  Yesterday, I threw out the old food and cleaned the bird feeder.

Ideally, I am looking for a no-waste product but am open.

The usual suspects that we are trying to attract are:

Woodpeckers
Blue Jays
Cardinals

We use a squirrel buster feeder.  Thanks in advance for any seed suggestions.

Anthony

We finally spotted a Purple Finch (Male) today for species #60!

Everyone says you will know its a purple finch, and not a house finch, when you see one.

They are right! They look very different in person!

Recently I started to feed the squirrels so that they wouldn't compete for food with the birds. I found a funny squirrel feeder, It is a Horse Head feeder of Accoutrements. Watching them go nuts over the feeder was pretty funny. We laughed so hard, and it became an instant hit for the kids. The head is hollow inside, and you can put a variety of nuts and seeds to attract them.

Make sure to fill your feeders, my birds go crazy in the hours before a storm. It's like Black Friday at my feeders.

I find the most popular time is when the grounds is covered with snow. I guess they can't find food elsewhere.

Another family of bird watchers
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/26/style/some-birds.html?

Very cute, but the bird collection shown in that picture is highly suspicious. Golden Eagles and peregrine falcons coming to a backyard feeder? I'm gonna call nope on that one.

I think the kid drew the pictures based on what he was learning in the book, not necessarily drawing them from life.  I enjoyed the image of the father, expecting only that a birdfeeder would distract his 5 year old for a few hours, and the kid becomes so enthusiastic that he teaches himself to draw birds, and learns to identify more birds than his father ever knew.

Nice shot, thanks for sharing! (The Goldfinches in your yard are much more vibrant than the ones by us!)

We had this very neat looking Fox Sparrow in our yard today! First time spotting one in our yard so that would be species #61 this year!

It very much reminded me of a (Female) Eastern Towhee in color and behavior. It is also much larger than other sparrows we see daily.

At first we even thought it was a female Eastern Towhee the way it was flicking back grass and leaves to find its food.

Nice!

On the subject, we have had a family of red foxes showing up for the past few weeks.
