Spotted a Pileated Woodpecker (wasn't hard, thing is massive). Magnificent creature.
One of our rare sightings. Have only seen it twice.

We have been spotting quite a few Hawks around our yard in the last month or so.

A few have stopped by our feeders stalking the song birds, but I haven't been able to get any pics of them doing so.

This adult Cooper's Hawk stopped by today right before sundown.

It had trapped a Song Sparrow under our feeder/deck and was hunting it down when we spotted it. (The Sparrow got away in the end)

I had a hard time nailing the shot in the lighting (through our window) but here are a couple good enough to share.

Update: It slept in our yard the entire day, and finally ended up leaving around 4:30 PM.

Does it hunt/stalk the birds?

We've never spotted it near the feeder, so I'm not sure.

They are mostly nocturnal so I'm not actually sure when they would even prey on birds. (It is a part of their diet)

The Hawks on the other hand, absolutely hunt/stalk the birds at our feeders. They are here daily now.

A new Hawk species checked out our backyard the other day. A Juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk!

This Cooper's Hawk was waiting patiently for a bird to land at our feeders. As soon as a Blue Jay landed, it swooped down to attack.

It didn't get it on the first attack, so it landed on a branch close by and then took off after it once the Jay took flight.

They both flew out of our yard so I don't know what ended up happening...

Where is the snow?

Lol That Hawk is about 30-40 feet off the ground. (If you look close you can see snow flakes falling though.)

Don't worry, there is plenty of snow on the ground!

Do new species only come on Shabbos, or do I just spend more time watching the feeders then?

Got two new ones today within five minutes of each other: savannah sparrow and red-breasted nuthatch. Total species count is now 30.
