Corona Destinations
« on: May 04, 2020, 07:52:13 PM »
Word is that lots of people in NY and NJ have had it and they have headed to summer homes upstate, dozens upon dozens have made their way to Florida, and some to California. There are WhatsApp groups on best routes (which states are ok to transit, where driving checkpoints are set up, where to fly out of (AA in PHL etc.) and other info.)

Makes a lot of sense. Everyone is stuck at home with the kids anyway, and many don’t have a minyan. Why not a change of scenery and less onerous restrictions?

Any other ideas out there for those of us who don’t own second homes? Any locales that are light on restrictions, and have ready access to kosher food etc.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume it's the Brooklyn people that live in Lakewood....

They are not necessarily spreading the disease. Instead of quarantining in a dense are they can quarantine in a less populated area.

Some will always look at this negatively.

What wrong of going to a place with a nicer setting while keeping the rules?

It's not only Jews, it the general population doing so.

The rich have done this in the beginning.

Those in more rural settings such as Lakewood and Monsey dont necessarily feel the rush.

It basically a government sponsored vacation for those with decent unemployment.

It’s a bit more than that. Some are flying out of PHL so they aren’t subject to rules applying to those coming in from the NY area. Some are driving through parts of Georgia to avoid roadblocks meant to stop them etc. As someone initially very involved to the social distancing effort in Lakewood said people are finished. They see that it’s over around them and are not interested in staying put at home any longer.

FYI: there are no physical rules  for those flying out of NYC.....

This is not limited to LKWD, it's all over the country.

I believe there is one checkpoint on the 95, easy to go around (my understanding).
Heard from some 1 in the airport last week saying no one is stopping people.

Doesn't seem like a good or even halachically acceptable idea...many people asymptomatic and don't know they carry the virus. This just sounds like it's going to bring about a higher rate of infection in areas such as FL where many older adults live and are already vulnerable to getting the virus. This is a matter of pikuach nefesh, stay home unless you are a) an essential worker b) need essentials or medical care.

This is insane and I can’t believe brooklyn or lakewood people would be okay with it, after they went crazy with shuls closing. HINT: if your Rav says your shul has to be closed, and you can’t daven with a minyan to the ribbono shel olam, you shouldn’t be traveling to a “nicer” place to live our your quarantine.

These are obviously people who are done with the guidelines. They don’t believe the situation on the ground warrants the home confinement any longer, and they are acting on it.
