I have a keyboard that has very little resistance so typing takes no additional physical effort. Why some people pay extra for mechanical keyboards that take extra effort and keys that must be fully depressed to register, has something to do with aesthetics, the noise, durability, but most importantly the RGB.

I use a cheap keyboard that has the old fashioned tall keys. I really dont like the new ones where you barely have press like on a laptop. I think it's just what your used to. And no mine doesn't have rgb.

I use the auto switch. Sometimes on a site where is takes to much to make it kick in I switch directly but not very often. Honestly I don't need so many keys. The thumb I use for media play/pause. For chrome I have the side keys move tabs and the horizontal scroll as zoom. Just remembered that I actually got the mouse from a Dan's Deal. (Staples had a buy for 100 pay 75).

I’m having bad back pain from sitting all day at my computer. I just bought an adjustable standing desk. Are the Herman Miller chairs really good? Is it worth the money? Thank you

I ones saw on someone's PC, as he hovers over a file it displays the file in a popup box(it was a MAC), far example a video will stat playing as long the mouse is on the file.
How do I get this, and can any PC have it ?

Sometimes a chiropractor can give you other suggestions and that bit of advice will cost a lot less than a Herman Miller chair.

Personally, I went to a chiropractor and he had me get someone to take pictures of me working and saw that I was supporting some of my weight on my armrests which was preventing me from sitting with my back straight. I unscrewed the armrests from my chair and within a week my back and neck were feeling 80% better. I miss the armrests a bit but my back and neck are better.

Obviously everyone's issues are different and you may not find a solution that way but 1 visit to a chiropractor for advice might be a worthwhile investment before splurging on a HM chair. (Beware that once you're in his office a chiropractor might try to get you to come back for another 10 visits, but you can always politely decline.)

ETA: Screen height/distance and keyboard/mouse placement and habits can also be game changers. A good chiropractor should be able to give you suggestions for all these things.

  • Location: The value of a forum such as this one is not in that one can post a question and receive an answer, but in that the question has most likely been asked before, and the answer is available to him that will but only use the search function.
  • Programs: 1. Search on google. 2. Search in the right board of DDF with a general word or two. 3. Read the wiki. 4. Read the thread. 5. Ask away.

A good mattress and a good office chair are 2 things I'll never understand people being cheap with.

People spend $20k+ on a car they use maybe an hour a day. But gawk at the idea of spending $1k on a chair you spend 8+ hours in a day or $2k on a mattress or you spend 6+ hours in a night.

Doesn't add up to me.

(And I'm being very generous with this numbers)

If someone wants to spend $1k on an office chair that's completely fine and I agree that it's a relatively small amount to spend on something that you'll use so much, but if someone is asking whether they need a $1k chair to cure their back problems my limited personal experience is that they might not.

Also, for many people a car is a necessity; a more comfortable office chair or mattress is not.

Probably because they believe that the extra $900 basically gets you a brand name and/or style points, not a significant increase in comfort / decrease in back pain etc

Then his point still stands. You can easily buy a car that will reliably get you from point a to point b for well under 20k. Those extra thousands of dollars are being paid for the comfort for those few hours a week while being stingy on a few hundred for a more comfortable and supportive chair that they sit in all day.

The car conversation is a bigger debate in terms of the costs and advantages of buying new vs. used vs. leasing and this is not the place to debate it, but I did not think JJ was talking about buying a luxury car.

People also might spend more on a car for reasons other than comfort (reliability, warranty, etc).
