A delta between public and private schools isn't sustainable. More likely that private schools will close than public schools will open. The numbers aren't going down anytime soon.
Tough call. Everyone knows that the public school closures are a union cave in that is not based on science by any account (public schools have a positivity rate well under 1%) and is harming the students. De Blasio and Cuomo boxed themselves into a corner when they negotiated with the unions months ago. It’s unlikely there will be any appetite to close private schools unless numbers rise dramatically.

I didn't see any mention of a possibility that some may have chosen to go to private schools which remained open?

Or how many moved out of state.

CDC misinterpreted our research on opening schools. It should loosen the rules now

"The guidance does not take into account the data we have regarding little disease transmission in schools. Nor, although the guidance cites the work performed across Wisconsin districts performed by our group and published in the MMWR, does it take that data and new analyses from that dataset into account. Keeping schools closed or even partially closed, based on what we know now is unwarranted, is harming children, and has become a human rights issue."

Extended school closures appear to have done much more harm than good

The harm don’t by things like this is oftentimes best seen in hindsight. I think we still don’t have the data to conclusively measure the “good” done by closing schools (however you choose to quantify it), and even if we did, it’s like comparing Apples to Oranges. Objectively speaking, how many lives have to be saved and/or long-COVID cases mitigated to “justify” the mental health, educational, developmental, and social (and ecomimic and other impacts if you want to take the conversation beyond school closures) impact on society?
