NYC DOE issued iPads
« on: May 05, 2020, 06:27:12 PM »
NYC has been issuing ipads to all students receiving services (therapy etc.)
see here https://www.schools.nyc.gov/learn-at-home/ipad-distribution

has anyone received them? have you found them useful?

I have mentioned elsewhere that they restrict zoom, an app that seems ubiquitous in today's e-yeshivos. has anyone had any luck dealing with that?

They say that they will need to be returned later. let's track that here as well.

Jailbreak it?
that's what I came here looking for.
is there a safe/easy way to do that?

I understand that with remote managed systems common in EDU they can see that (the device has a warning against tampering). has anyone done this? do they care if you do?

This is not meant to be preachy, just want to have an honest conversation

If they gave you the iPad with certain restrictions, would it be stealing to use it in violation of those restrictions?

It would certainly be unethical.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

Jailbreak it?

I received it and it can't be jailbroken.

The system is completely locked down. Apple embeds this security feature all the way down to the hardware. There is no way around it.

The DOE sent out a letter today that they will allow zoom, but only through the DOE's website. Since most teachers are not using zoom that way, it's pointless.

I went ahead and bought two iPads on sale. Not gonna wait for the DOE.

LOL
The app that they put in isn't locked to meetings from the secure DOE portal. Kids' regular classes work just fine :)

(according to how they describe their security enhancements, if the DOE teachers create their classes through the secure portal, those will still be secure, only accessible to DOE students...)

The Zoom app was automatically loaded onto my Ipad overnight.

I see online that, any jailbreak if successful would be temporary, revert back.
I'm wondering though if there is a crack that's feasible, even just to let a few apps be installed

Which model iPad is it? It may be jailbreakable using checkm8 - which is a hardware exploit.
